You obviously haven't been to a shoot with Nick as part of the admin/judges. He doesn't need amplification - as demonstrated at the shoot in Salisbury.

I don't think anyone mentioned age - I know and respect Roy H, and trust me the age of the judges wouldn't concern him!

I stand corrected on that point John. I must ask Roy what his criteria are - I know he describes himself as elderly in his profile - it surprises me that he puts the judges we have jointly come into contact with in the same bracket.

When I complained it was for all the people who back up archery ,young or old so many people take us for granted and seem to expect that we are faceless few that do not want to shoot . I am sure the chap who complained is a perfectly nice guy who let his annoyance get the better of him without thinking , i to have been at shoots were i cannot hear the presenter but i just shout speak up . we do have a bull horn but to stand in front of fifty or sixty people yelling through one of them things is so impersonal and kills of the feeling of commarderie (try and tell jokes through one) besides people who know me will tell you i dont need one
John

One thing that really hacks me off is when the Judge says "We will start at 2:15", assuming you know what time his watch says. I cannot wear a watch - they always stop - so I don't know whether 2:15 is in three minutes or three hours. And I have been at a shoot where the judge made that announcement without realising that his watch had stopped. Just say "we now have a 20 minute break with 5 minute warning"

But without a watch how do you know when the 20 minutes will be up, or do you have a stopwatch at the ready?

However in order to try and add to this thread, and an alternative to having a PA system, why not use some laminated sheets of A4 with numbers on them to display the new start time?

These can then be nice and BIG and have a coloured background so that everyone can see them? Someone in a club is bound to have access to a laminator at work, or know someone that does. Also helps forgetful people like me asking others "Do you remember what time the restart was?"

1st yr uni students do this too (sit at the back and only shuffle forward an inch when asked). I usually inform them that their fellow students don't smell and neither do I.

Not all clubs have the funds to purchase modern equipment. The club I grew up in had a wooden shed to store the targets in and that was it. If they spent money on sound gear when we had to walk 30 minutes to get to a toilet, there might have been a lynching.

communication at shoots

Oh dear, oh dear oh deary me! I am sorry to have upset a qivver-ful of arrows! I was certainly NOT having a go at judges ( even with all their lapel badges) but at clubs who,I think, should have some form of sound amplification these days so that these hard working and very responsible judges at shoots are heard properly and that their words are not wasted in the wind. As far as club budgets are concerned, portable loud hailers that run on AA batteries can be bought on the internet for less than the total income of an average raffle. And Tel is correct; age is not an issue I take too seriously - all the judges I have met so far are as young men to me!!!!
