string length

How do I work out what string length I need?

I have a 25" hoyt matrix with medium hoyt crx limbs (which I think make them 68")

thanks

John

The hoyt manual recomends a 65" string?????
Would 1/2" make much differance???

And SMD only sell 64 or 66" strings...

Tony is right. I've found a 65" string (Hoyt recommended) is a bit too long for my 68" bow. I haven't count the exact number of twists. But in order to maintain the bracing hight to 9" of my Helix. I need to twist the string for more than 20 times!

Its another of those 'find whats best for you' jobs - longer with more twists or shorter with less, experiment until you find the one that gives you the best result. If you get them made you can ask for what you want length-wise but I'd highly recommend having a go at making your own - not only can you play with strand-count, serving size and length etc. it is also very satisfying to 'shoot your own'!

20 twists is nothing. most manufacturers recommend a minimum of about 20 twists in their strings, and a maximum of roughly 40.

String length is also dependent on string material. Dacron will stretch so needs to be shorter at the making stage. Modern materials hardly stretch at all, so are made to the shooting length from the start.
64.5" was recommended but 65" gives you more choice of bracing height. You can twist up the long one to shorten it, but you can't lengthen the shorter one if you want to try a lower BH.

65" may be OK for some 68" bow/limb combination, but it is too long for most. After the initial stretch, you will probably end up with over 80 twists to get the right bracing height. 64.5" would be a better choice.

Hoyt recommend that it shouldn't be less than 20 twists. But mine is around 25 to 30 twists and i was told that's too many!
Instead of the bracing hight. Can u guys elaborate more about the effect of those twists? Do they have something to do with stability and accuracy?

Nick Forster has taken part in the Archery Interchange Ironman Challenge shoot
WL Ranking:
SL Ranking:

I have a 68" bow my string length is 64 3/4" I have 52 twists in my string and it shoots very well.
Dont worry about the twists, if you are indout about the length ask Stu369 to make you a string, tell him the type and length of bow and from experience he will mke you a good string.
Nick
