2nd set of limbs?

Ok, 2 queries really - when and how much?

I've been shooting about 6 weeks since completing a beginner's course and am shooting on relatively cheap (£65) 32lb limbs. I haven't got my technique right yet though so although I try to shoot off my back I know I'm still shooting from the arm a bit - the muscles in my arm ache a little, but in my back quite a lot so I'm hoping that means I'm mostly doing it right!?

So, I know I need to up my draw weight sometime, and was originally thinking to go through the winter/indoor season on the 32's and concentrate on technique before upping them, but am now wondering if by upping the limbs I'll force myself totally onto my back - and spend the winter getting it right in readiness for next year's outdoor season?

I'm thinking of going up to 36 or 38? ...and I'm wondering whether to do it soon or leave it until next year?

Any thoughts?

Thanks, J

Leave it to next year....first the technique. With more strenght, you'll not improve your technique, because you will be doing to much strenght.

You can create good technique with low power limbs. You cannot create a good technique whilst struggling with more bow weight than you can handle.

Stick with the limbs you've got. Perfect your draw and release technique with them. Wind them up a bit when you feel they are too weak. Replace them with higher poundage only when you feel they are holding you back.

Thank you both for the replies - so I guess I'm sticking with 32's for now - makes sense. Hoping next year to move up through 2nd Class to 1st Class so I guess I'll have to get stronger limbs then.

Cheers, J

Get control of the limbs you have first.

my coach had told me the same thing. limbs with lower poundage would be good to beginners for consolidating their form and all other technique.
i took my first archery course in july this year. and now i can have average 315 at 18m and 300 at 25m.

Stick with the lower poundage, you dont need more power for indoors.

Also, when you do get round to getting hevier limbs, be carefull how heavy you go, its all too easy to jump in at 38 pounds, only to later find out its just that bit too heavy (as i found) If your arms ache at 32 pounds they will fall off with 38

I'd say you should leave it at least until the outdoor season to get your back muscles used to shooting and the lower poundage will enable to work on your technique without the extra strain of heavier limbs.

Your setup looks very similar to mine - not sure about your draw length, which will impact how much poundage you're actually pulling, but if it's similar to mine then it's perfectly possible to get 1st class scores.

You can adjust the poundage up and down a bit by adjusting the limb pockets on your riser, if you want to just add a small amount later on.

You have a nexus yes. Why not wind it up when your ready. You should gain upto 3+lb. If it dose not work you can always wind it back down. So when you technique is sorted and you have it wound up all the way and you want to go more then get new limbs. Winding up the limbs is the cheapest way of gaining draw weight. Many say wond up bows dont perform as well. I dont think this have ever been proven but as a new archer this should not affect you to any noticable level.
