Things.

When you have been in archery a few years (try 50), you tend to notice things. Things such as the type of cakes, the types of archers, types of bows..things like the tents and ...well..just things.
Yesterday, I was attending the Cleve Arhers York up in Bristol, and having not done much Target archery outside of Cornwall and Devon since moving from Birmingham, this was a new venue. On arriving at the venue one of the *things* I noticed was that it was a 10 minute walk to the shooting line from the car park..so next time when shooting at this venue, I'll add 20 minutes to the travel time to make sure I get there in extra good time.
When getting to the target line (Gents York) after booking in, I noticed other *things* one of them being how the field was set out. Another thing was where the wind was coming from...as both these *things* would have a baring on the day's outcome.
Running the full length of the archery field and starting well before Target 1 was the following: A railway embankment, a road and a 20 meter depth tree lined bank. This tree lined bank with trees extending to 80ft+ ran the whole length of the field and ran roughly North to South, with the Target No1 lane being only 10 meters from it. The wind all day was from the southwest and west, and as such this tree lined bank gave complete protection from the wind to those shooting closest to it..and true enough throughout the whole shoot, the flags on targets 1 to 8 hardly moved (if at all) but from about 9 to 15 archers and arrows and flags caught the troublesome wind all day...so much so that the poor devils on the end of the Gents line had the worst of it. Being on Target 11 put me in a good position to view the spread of the arrows from target 1 to 15 and sure enough, even with compound archers shooting the spread got wider as you moved from 1 to 15. Just one of those *things* that you notice.
I also made note that the winning gents recurve scores all came from those targets which were sheltered by the huge tree bank...1 through to 8.
It made me smile at lunchtime when looking at the target list, that all the Gents recurve archers from one club were positioned on targets 1 to 8 with two on target No 1! Another club had all but one of their archers on targets 9 -15...and there was an interclub competition going on. It was probably just a slip of the pen when entering those entries..nothing more I'm sure. Just another one of those *Things* you notice.
So, by noticing these *Things* and with our prevailing winds coming from the southwest/west, if I shoot Cleve again and go for the *burn* I will polietly ask if I can be put on targets 1 through 8.
I'm helping a young 12 year old at the moment and I've already told him to get to know your grounds..but not as to the reason why..yesterday would have showed him why...just another one of those little *Things* that you pick up on when doing your archery.
Now, the Deer Park at Dunster...what *Things* I could tell you about that field...what with me being from Devon and Dunster being in Somerset? Maybe another day..maybe another day.

One of the *things* I learn't yesterday whilst shooting an intercounty match between Staffordshire, Cheshire and Worcester being held on the Wirral was ''the rain will start again shortly as the seagulls have gone quiet''. They had been quiet while it had been raining but once it stopped they took flight and starting sqwarking. I hadn't noticed myself but suddenly it had gone quiet and a chap on our target came out with that statement. Sure enough it did rain again but was this knowledge learnt through years of archery or just a lucky guess?

Have you told the Met Office in Exeter about that one? They could do with some help.

Nice one Dave,

It made me smile. Even before the end I guessed what was coming, but I'm also sure that it was completly unnoticed by those allocatimg the targets.

Perhaps, ........... just perhaps, it may not happen again, particularly if the club see this entry and are now aware of their unknown error, or consider that TVF ... (Treating Visitors Fairly) is a wise action.

The shelter you get on target 1-8 is fairly well known, or at least noticed by those that get sent to targets 9+!!

On the other hand, when I last shot there was for a H2H and my first opponant had qualified in the still zone where I hadn't. Our match was over on the right hand side of the field and he seriously struggled with the sudden appearance of blustery wind whereas I carryed on as before.

Would have won my second match if I'd estimated how much I needed to move my sight when moving back into the still zone!! A lovely group, all in the 8 at 9 o'clock!!
