is it the same foam ?

often you see foam strip targets. the type where foam strips are sandwiched between two end boards and clamped tight.

does anyone know if it the same foam that is used in the cheap camp mats ? (they are not the ones that inflate)

has anyone cut up one of those cheap, solid foam (about 1cm thick) and sandwiched it for a target?

I can't say for certain that it is the same but have noticed that even the ones sold by archery outlets can vary.I had one that welded itself to my arrows and pulled layers out when removing the arrows. It was replaced free so there must have been others, I guess.
Are you thinking of making one form cheap camping mats?
How much cheaper do you think it will be for something like a small 65 cm one?

well, the mat is made of eva foam. it's 1cm thick. the size is 180x50cm. and aus$4 each.

the shed's got the 4 rods, bolts, and old wood to sandwich with..

so, i could make a 50x50cm target with a depth of 20...divide 180 length into 9 @ 20cm...an extra sheet for compression...thats 6 mats...for $24 dollars.

the question is...could it handle 10m blank bale at home?

if i go to 25cm depth i need 8 at $32. but am getting close to a third of the cost of a store bought version... the freight cost of targets to australia makes them expensive...particularly when it's just for an evenings blank bale.

If you buy one camp mat, cut it to the width you want (20cm) Roll it tight and strap it up firmly, so you can shoot into it. See how it perform and if you get good results, bingo!

the foam strip target IIRC are plastizote layers, the camping mat bits will work but the chances of bounce outs are increased.

plastizote= 2-3mm, camping mat = 5-10mm.

at our club there are a couple of bosses that around the edges seem to have the thicker foam and trying to stick the target pins in is a nightmare.

We have built up our own layered foam targets at our club in the past. We got foam off cuts from Sherwood foams in Stockport, there may well be a similar company near you. They wouldn't charge a lot for the material because it is waste product for them.

Using some wood and threaded rods we were able to make up a few targets for our indoor range. (We don't have enough storage space to use them outdoors.)

Hazard with compounds, they go in so fast the arrow melts the foam and, as you say, welds to it.
I have no problems with my slow moving Longbow or my slightly quicker recurves, I much prefer foam to straw though
