I still use press ups and they are excellent, but i would recommend trying to get onto your knuckles (make a fist) the horrible angle of the wrist on a regular push up can easily lead to an injury. wrist wraps will also help. Push up handles r also highly beneficial.

obviously using regular food is fine, but in order to develop you need your 3 constants TRAINING- DIET- REST
u must address your diet otherwise your efforts will result in minor, limited and extremely slow progress.

good luck.

Unfortunately for me and living in asia, my diet staples include rice, some braised meat, meat stuffed steamed buns, rice, veggies and did I say rice? Meat only comprises an average of 20% of our diets. Once in a long while though I do go for some Carl Jrs, KFC, Pizza Hut and almost every other american export like taco bell blah blah....

Taking a protein shake in this instace is absolutely indespensible. It's basically a food supplement to bump up the overall protein in your diet. Would be much harder for me to down 6 eggs a day and a few steaks hehe.

Hey, a bit late to this obviously, but I'm just getting back into archery after a break and some injuries (2x whiplash, plus one dislocated shoulder!) so my muscles are RUBBISH! I've had serious problems with muscle wasting.

I can't take any of those weight-gain 5000 type things due to food allergies- but a friend of mine had a personal trainer once and their tip was to eat lean protein within an hour after working out. Tuna's good. I keep a stock of roasted chicken drumsticks in the freezer and microwave them when I need them. Seems to work!

You might want to invest in some free weights, or buy some physio bands? I think Quicks sell them but you could probably find them cheaper elsewhere. HTH

Just to add another side to the Creatine story a lad i worked with was taking Creatine based supplement while he was training, it may not contain steroids but he did display many roid rage symptoms.
Short temper, mood swings with rapid escalation from one end of the temprement spectrum to the other.
last thing you want while your trying to shoot

This has to be him and him alone. I haven't come across anyone in the gym with any roid rage synthoms while taking creatine and to be honest with you, we're the same day in day out with a little extra pump when we train with weights.

Maybe your coworker was on a strict diet or doing something stressful in other aspects of his life while hoping to improve his gains which would be the most likely cause of excess stress, anxiety and the "roid rage". My 2 cents

What I do know is that creatine does help a ton when I'm playing football and while running/lifting weights

Heres a link to bodybuilding.com which may help you understand how it works. If I'm not mistaken, Dave Barnes used creatine at one point of his archery career or so I'm led to believe by a post he made on Archery Forum. Not sure though.

I tried creatine in the past and it really didnt agree with me. I suffered from muscle ache the whole 2 weeks I was on it before packing it in. I may had poor quality stuff - it was Holland and Barrets and their gear seems to be considered very poor by anyone seriously into weight training.

I would recommend a good whey protein supplement though as its very useful whether you're training to lose bodyfat or build muscle. I get mine from myprotein.co.uk - The Leading Online Manufacturer & Supplier of Sports and Nutritional Supplements and recommend the banana, raspberry, chocolate or choc-mint flavours. Strawberry was too sweet for me and unflavoured was just vile. They also do some amazing whey-protein raspberyy flapjacks made from whey and oats, extremely tasty and none of the fat and sugar real flapjack has. I often take one or two of these to shoots with me. If anyone wants to order, use the code MP30835 for 5% off your first order.

I messed around with weights for years before I finally did some research on the net and got my head round the whole diet thing. Once i got the diet right, the weight just flew off and I made very good strength gains. I didnt pack on much muscle as I was training more for losing fat, but i didnt lose any either as people often do when they crash-diet and thats the important thing. You dont need supplements at all, but I did find the whey shakes pretty useful.

hope this helps

Holland and Barrett stock stuff made by other companies when it comes to the body building bits, it just tends to cost more then online stores.

I used creatine for quite a while when I was body building (10 years + ago) creatine was newly out and seen as the new wonder compound. I suffered very bad liver pains after consistent high dose use. I didn't associate it to the creatine as everyone said it was safe, however my wife ended up reading a study on the stuff and there are some implied links to liver issues. The main gist of the study was that if you take it you should use it for periods and vary amounts, much as you should with weight training any way.

Use creatine when going through a heavy weights cycle then back it out when you do a stamina phase, if you don't periodise your training - you should consider it....

I've met Dorian Yates a few times, (he was friends with the own of a Gym I went to both Olympia contestants) He recommend a Load Phase, Training phase, and another phase which I can't remember, with equal breaks in-between. i.e. 3 months on 3 months off, creatine strips water from your body puts it into you muscle therefore dehydrates you, thus giving your muscles alarger surface area to train (rip).

One thing with protein powders etc, if you take them, and as I have had a medical condition which means I lose proteins from my body I noticed and proved when I almost ended up in hospital that you body can not absorb the majority of the protein shake it just comes out in your urine, as I would regularly test. you are better off eat egg whites or chicken.

to be honest for Archery keep well clear of the lot of it, spend the money on supplements on equipment or coaching.

Archery doesn't require it does it? Beyond practice (the more the better, to a degree) there is surely no identifiable substance that can give you an edge. Unless of course we're talking cookies....
