When I lived in Arizona we lived by the following set of rules.

Never run when you can walk
Never walk when you can stand
Never stand when you can sit
If there is shade, use it if there isn't make some


and always, always, always drink lots of water.

Look for clothes that contain X-static thread and fibres. It's a silver oxide thread that conducts heat away from your body. Brasher Boots make socks with x-static fibres .. keeps your feet really cool.
