Safely removing arrows from wood without a knife!

Instead of carrying a blade for getting arrows out of the wood work use an old plain screw driver and use it to separate the grain either side of the arrow before attepting to pull the arrow. This avoids the hassel you may get for carrying a sharp object in a public place.

now you have gone and removed the excuse for the pose ! - however - a short wood chisel is better.

It all depends on who made the chisel or screwdriver - these days (cue grumpy old man complaining about 'modern' tools) a lot of screwdrivers and chisels are not tempered properly, so are as brittle as glass (they keep a good edge but won't prise the grain apart). Not only that but those lovely hunting knives are also not designed to bend very much. The first time I tried to lever a shaft out with my nice shiny Buck hunting knife, I ended up with an expensive screwdriver! Great knife for skinning a bear, but not much use in Brighouse unless the local circus has been over casual with its animal transporter.

I note you are a TP fan Flandyman - perhaps going out armed with woodworking tools might get you nicked for Breaking and Decorating!

Another alterntive is to used the stuck point as a the centre of turn, and rotate the arrow whilst genlty, but with enough force to pull it out. This will make a hole big enough to remove the arrow, with mininal damage to the leg, and no need to a knife/ chisel

i think screwdrivers are covered under the "sharp objects in public places" act, as are metal combs with pointed handles.

Trust me..... when said wooden object is a large tree, the only thing that works is a knife!

Knives and chisels are brittle. Flat bladed "cabinet" screwdrivers, sharpened to an edge, used in pairs are more "legal" and work better in wood. Granted they don't look as good as a knife. Less harmful on the shaft when probing the soil for buried arrows. But bulkier to carry.Does antone carry a metal wedge and hammer?
