The arrow would be tuned to the bow/archer, not the frequency of the transponder.

No joy on the RFID idea, it seems they only have a range of a inch or so (seems the claims in the press have been very much exaggerated)

I have found that Maplin electronics sell roles of thin sticky metal tape for around £3, which is around 1" wide and a few stripes of this round the wooden arrow shaft make it very much easier to find with a metal detector.

I experimented with maetal paint but there just isn't enough metal in it to detect

another approach

I suggest we use piles of depleted uranium.. very dense, very hard, and you can find lost arrows with a geiger counter. Of course the protective clothing might be a bit warm in the summer...

Our problem in the winter season (frostbites and hardy souls) is finding arrows in foot deep water. If the nock does not show above the water, there are problems.

Rfid

At my workplace we use RFID tags to keep track of foodstuffs for distribution to supermarkets. The RFID tags are as flat a sheet of copier paper, about the size of a 50p coin and self-adhesive. These could probably be incorporated in shaft wraps. They are programmable so could contain the archers details as well. They cost about 15p each. As to range, the range is a function of the aerial you are using to communicate with. We use big portals the size of a door frame, these provide a range of about 2 feet. We have handheld scanners that are good for about 6 inches. If you use a device with a 2 foot range you have a 4 foot diameter circle to search.

Yeah... it could be a new disapline of Archery... So there would be Target, Field and Cahv field (where chavs are tied up at un marked distances with scoring zones drawn on them)

Anyway.... OUr club usually usually uses a rake if we can't find the arrow... and i usally turns up after i've gone to get the rake and just got back, meaning i have to truge back to the store where we keep the rake and bosses for outdoors... a round trip of around 300 meters

Wingate, you appear to have created a whole new dicipline: Swamp Archery

I have also emailed a couple of RFID companies to see if I can get a response from them?

Most of the electronics in RFID are to do with transmitting/receiving information where as we just need to detect it is there, so there may be something more basic which can be used ?
for those who use carbons which are that bit harder to detect, try putting a slither of run of the mill kitchen foil up the shaft, works wonders and practically weightless, works for me in field archery.

As we are expecting 500,000 Rumanians to come here this year , with no work for them, it was suggested that we give them yellow t shirts with red sleeves and let them walk up and down on the 100yd line
