The best thing to do is join a club and get a coach to start you right.

There's no real substitute for proper coaching by someone who knows what they're talikng about.

Good luck!

But in the mean time have a look at a book or two - Archery - Steps to Success was my choice but I'm sure that others have their own recommendations. Also keep reading posts here to build up a back ground knowledge.

It may take you a while....but if you look at the many threads on here, you will see discussions on anything you can think of. If there is something else you need to know - just ask!!

As said the best thing to do is join a club, check out NFAS or GNASwebsites, they have a good database of local clubs you can join, have you chosen a discipline yet? Field or target? What bow you going to be using? So many questions I know but it will help others to help you.

Tom's profile answers some of the questions you ask.

Blandy-Jenkins is a relatively new club in South Wales but they seem to run a number of courses and it looks like Tom has signed up for their next course in February.

Hi Tom, and welcome to the forum!

I found these internet links very helpful when I was starting, just to have a step-by-step description of basic technique:

http://www.centenaryarchers.gil.com.au/the10.htm
(There are many other helpful pages on this site as well!)

http://www.student.utwente.nl/~sagi/artikel/steps/

http://www.humankinetics.com/product...xcerpt_id=3681

Most clubs/coaches will have their own versions of this shooting sequence (anywhere from 9 to 12 steps), but they all follow more or less the same mold.

One bit of advice : I know February is going to feel like a long way away, but don't be tempted to buy any equipment until you've had proper coaching and a few different bows in your hands at your club.

Best of luck!

Just a couple quick tips.

1. Stand tall. A slouching posture can cause back problems if you start to pull heavy poundage
2. Pose. Too many archers drop there bow arm (arm holding the bow) the look for the arrow. Dont worry about the arrow. Just pose and keep you arms up until the arrow has hit the target or the grass.
3. Dont get dipondant if you miss. We all miss and make mistakes. The more you practice and enjoy it the better you will get.
4. Final tip. Listern to your instructor. Chances are he knows more than you so take his advise.

Once you have completed your course feel free to come and ask us any questions you have no matter how silly you think it is.

...and you may already know this, but just in case, I should add:

5. Never "dry-fire" a bow! A dry-fire is when you draw & release the string without an arrow. Arrows don't seem heavy, but they give enough resistance to absorb the considerable energy in the string and keep the bow from self-destructing when you release. Release without an arrow, and the bow might well self-destruct.

Have a great time on your beginners course!
