I haven't gave this a good thinking through yet but perhaps the Inverse Square law, used when making calculations for lighting systems, might be nearer the mark to follow if interpreted somewhat, move a light source twice the distance and you get four times the spread of light though its 4x weaker, so with that loosely in mind move from 100yrds to 50yrds and the area of the gold will be 4x larger not 2x as you may think. So at it's best it takes 4x as much skill to get a six gold end at 100yd than it is at 50yds on a flat calm day..
