Transport Longbow by plane

I have the opportunity to go and shot in Italy with colleagues there. Has anybody transport a longbow by plane... what are you experiences?

Best

No problem unless you are travelling on very small aircraft (Jetstream 31 comes to mind).

Go to your local building suppliers and buy a short length of soil pipe (large diameter drain pipe) and two blank ends (these screw on and off).

Cut to just over length of bow (or bow bag preferably) and pad both ends slightly so a 'snug fit'.

I have travelled several times with two bows plus arrow container all in a Quicks deluxe longbow bag inside the soil pipe tube.

No problems with airport/check-in (although someone may ask you to open for examination, so allow plenty of time at check-in, you will almost certainly have to take it to 'out of gauge' check-in) other than carrying the bloody thing together with your normal bags without side swiping someone enroute.

I recommend the padded bow bag (the Quicks deluxe one is excellent for normal use/storage as well) to stop stuff rattling around too much within the tube. Packed like this not even the most clumsy and careless of airport loaders will harm your bow(s).

Have a good trip.

Don't fly with Ryanair as said many times they do not carry weapons and any archery equipment is considered a weapon by them.

Easyjet will be more accomodating.

I think that you may want to take your GNAS/NFAS etc card with you, but not sure what else.

Are we covered by GNAS etc for shooting abroad?

This is the reply from GNAS when I asked the question "Taking Bows Abroad"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Archery equipment is permitted in most European countries, it is
Crossbows that have tight regulations. Many people take their equipment
on holiday with them.

However, I would recommend speaking to your airline direct and before
you travel, as they are the ones who have the restrictions on what items
they carry.

For example Easyjet does not allow archery equipment to travel as
sporting goods. So you are not able to take it onboard their Aircrafts
either as hand luggage or in the hold.

I hope that this information is of use to you. If you have any further
questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for all this information.

I have ordered a soil pipe from our local suppliers - living on an island means a couple of days wait but should be fine.

I really wanted to travel by train - however train in UK is extortionate, from Paris to Rome it is £59 return but from Glasgow to Paris makes the journey £300! Three times the cost of the plane....I know it is costly eco wise but i do not have the cash to buy eco points!

I have checked with Jet2 and they are happy to take archwery equipment as long as it is in a sealed container.

thanks for all you help..
