String Making

Hi Everybody!

*Hi Dr Nick!*

I mademy first attempt last night at making my own string using a homemade jig, i was impressed with how it came out but it was alittle short ( about half an inch ) so im going to have another go tonight.

one thing i was concerned about tho is......

When you tie off the endless loop obviously you are left with a small knot... where do you place this in the string?

i imagine you serve over it in the end loops? I had it at the end of a served 5" section that became a loop, so it was covered by the serving that forms the loop and binds the strands into one string. Was this correct?

There's no need to tie the loop off as you describe. You can use those tag ends to start the end loop serving and then finish off with noraml serving along the neck of the string - as GRIV shows on his DVD or you just use your serving tool and serve directly over the 2 tag ends with your serving as usual

Yep as Whisky says - no need to tie off the two ends. You tie one end of the string material to one post when you start, tie the other end to the other post when you finish so that the ends cross over. Serve the end loop then simply cut off the extra bits of the two ends and finish the shank of the end loop.

The archer's reference has some basic diagrams on what the process looks like, but it sounds like you're pretty much sorted. Well done!

V.....

Others have explained how to make a string WITHOUT tieing a knot, and you may decide to make your next strings that way. However, the way you described placing the knot just to the edge of your end-loop serving and then serving over it with your loop-lock is the proper way to do it if you DO TIE the ends. - John
