Smile Where are the women.

Is it me or are there a distinct lack of women that participate in archery (except Little Miss Purple of course)

Peronally i feel i woul shoot much better if i had the chance to shoot with some women once in a while.

What do you lot think please let me know?

Welcome to the madhouse, have some and .

There are very few women who shoot, most of the female archers don't come close to being womanly!

One has to wonder where you're shooting. We're rather abundant and pretty cute down this way.

Question for the Ladies:

What attracted you to the sport of archery?

We are trying to put together a campaign to attract more ladies to our club. In a membership of 60 we only have 3 ladies.
We have identified some "barriers to participation" as they say, but even with those negative "barriers" removed, ladies must "want" to take part, so what makes ladies want to take up our sport?

I dont want my personal charisma to be the only draw

A very good question..why aren't there more women in sport generally?

Concerning archery, I have asked many a woman who follow their men folk around and most say *O'h I couldn't do that!* When persuing this a little further they then state that they are surpressed from doing such things by their men folk with further comments such as *O'h he wouldn't approve* or *he is worried that I might be better at it than him*. Maybe it is because of men's attitudes that there are less women in sport and this includes archery.
As a footnote, how much womens participation sport do you see on T.V.? Very, very little.

Part of our plan is a campaign in our local press showing Ladies taking part in archery with things like mini interviews. It seems to be the old circle: to get ladies, you need ladies. Of the ladies we already have, they are all very independant professional types who dont rely on husbands to drive them around, and no kids either. Someone suggested a creche so that young mums could attend (anyone want to run a creche?)
The ideal starting point seems to be mid-teenage girls (junior ladies). Archery should be an ideal sport in schools for those who are not into team sports like netball, hockey, football or rugby.

How about a mums and daughters have a go session and then follow up with anybody who was keen to continue straight away.

If you have juniors, have a parents evening for both mum and dad

With "mums" the bigest problem is actually making time for themselves. To do something, anything where they are not interupted for five minutes by children and husbands is just wonderful. Now if you can "market" archery to be something that can help reduce stress and can be relaxing ..... that might draw them in. We can work towards the stressful aspects of top level archery later.

For me archery is my night off from the family. It is purely ME TIME (except when I bring the kids of course, then it is coaching/fun time)
