Hey there

Nice to find a forum with so much recurve info (most US archery discussions and clubs, at least near my home, focus on bow hunting - nothing wrong with that - it's just not my thing).

Somewhat new to archery- got involved with Scouting as a basic camp instructor a year ago, then my two boys decided to "go in other directions," so now my 8-yr old and I just shoot for fun in the back yard - we're fortunate to live in a somewhat rural area with plenty of room - my back yard "range" can accomodate anywhere from 20-50 yards. Maybe someday I'll give Saturday morning lessons.

I shoot a W&W Evolution II with Challenger Craft limbs, Cartel sight and Cartel front-rod stabilizer. My 8-yr old shoots a Ragim Ranger recurve (beginner-level take-down recurve) with a starter sight.

RE: Hey there

Welcome to the forum, John! We're happy to have archers from all over the world join us. Enjoy yourself!

I was wondering#if there were many FITA-style#archery clubs in the US. Have you heard of the New England School of Archery?

RE: Hey there

I'm sure there are a few, but good luck finding them......there's even a Connecticut Target Archers Association, but the site's rarely up-to-date (one event in 2005?) - it's hardly worth the effort, in my opinion:

www.ctarchery.org

....was interested in watching the state outdoor championships last year, but it took several e-mails over several weeks to get any detailed info from anyone.

Yes, I've heard of the New England School of Archery - can't find them on the web anymore, but here's some contact info - I think they mostly run classes in Maine or New Hampshire, with an occasional class in MA or CT:

Marcia Wyman
nesainc@aol.com

Here's a link to a 2005 schedule that includes some of Marcia's instruction:

That's really a shame#that the target archery clubs are so few and far between. I'd really like to continue the training that I've had here, but I'm not interested in hunting, field, 3D etc. Thanks for the tip on Marcia. I'll send her an email.

RE: Hey there

Warning: "Sticker Shock"

Just out of curiosity, I checked the cost of a Level 1 Instructor (to teach kids at camps) course through that link - $175, which is REALLY high (my Level 1 course a year ago was $80). Usually a Level 1 course is 1 day, min age 16. For some reason, this course is 2 days, min age 18, and oh, don't be late - "you may be denied access..." - give me a break. I sense an "attitude." If group classes are this expensive, private or semi-private lessons will be, well, you'd just better be sitting down when they tell you the price...

Another source I found was at Lancaster (PA) Archery Supply, but their lessons are around $100-$200. Basically anyone who has lots of experience or has a high-level certification or is well-known is going to charge a premium....

RE: Hey there

Wow! And I was complaining about UK prices cheaper than that!! I paid something like £40 for 4 days of training!!!

I guess I've been away from the US longer than I thought. I remember everything be cheaper there. Well, thanks for the information. At least I know it's available if I need it.

Got an email from Matt Nicely of Nicely Equipped Archery in Gorham, ME. He has indoor and outdoor ranges with FITA targets and runs adult training sessions.

RE: Hey there

There are quite a few of those around - this winter I may check out Hall's Arrow in Manchester, CT which is approx 45 minutes from me....apparently there are 3 separate indoor ranges and they claim there's always plenty of availability....

http://www.hallsarrow.com/indoor.htm

What I'm poking around for is a FITA-style club that meets on a semi-regular basis, has informal shoots, does adult training, has regular access to indoor/outdoor ranges, etc.

For instance, the "Connecticut Archery Association," in which there are 8 member clubs, is pretty much a field archery/hunting deal....
