Shooting Better with New Limbs

3 weeks ago I swapped my starter limbs (Challenger Craft 28lb) for a new set of Everest Pro 36lb.

Since I have been using the new limbs my shooting has been far more consistent and accurate even though I have not fully tuned the bow yet.

I tried my first ever Portsmouth yesterday on the garden range and shot a score of 551 which I was quite pleased with.

The question that springs to mind is, could there have been something wrong with my starter limbs which I was struggling to get any kind of consistency with ?

A couple of things to consider;
Your new limbs are almost certainly better than your old ones, this will make some difference.
You *know* that your new limbs are better than your old ones - this will make a significant difference.
And it could be that your arrows are a better match to your new limbs than your old ones (this doesn't have much to do with the tuning)...

Part of it could be "new toy syndrome". It happens that you buy a new piece of kit, and your shooting improves. Trouble is, it doesn't always last...
It doesn't just happen at your level. A guy at the club bought himself a new Matrix/G3 limbs put it together and without tuning shot a Portsmouth round for the hell of it - cue a new PB (586...). It's unlikely to be the limbs as he was shooting FX before to a high 570/low 580s level...

I know people that shoot respectable scores with Challenger Craft limbs. Were yours wood or carbon?

I believe this is more often than not because most recurve archers cant tune their gear. They buy new stuff, they fluke a better tune, and then think "now if I tune this I'll score better" and out the window it goes.

Phil
SOme questions
* Did you also buy new arrows?
* What length and spine are they?

It's easy to tune arrows. Lots of people spend a lot of time doing it. You just follow the recipes. It doesn't do a great deal.
It's not easy to match arrows (find the right arrows for your setup). Automated programs oversimplify the process. Charts can be misleading or confusing. People misinterpret the information provided. People seldom actually know the correct information about their basic setup (draw weight etc). Matching is a "black art".

If the shafts used with the old limbs were mismatched, while the ones used with the new ones weren't, that would make a difference.

This was the first time I had actually tried a Portsmouth so I had no scores previously which I could benchmark myself against. I only started shooting at the end of August when I took a beginners course at Chiltern Archery.

Marcus

Yep I also changed my arrows and I am now using 28" 1913 XX75 and my draw is 27" I have measured the draw weight on the fingers using a calibrated scale and it was dead on 34lb.

Sky-High

The Craft limbs I had were wood.

Rik

The arrows were matched to the limb weight for the old shafts, this was done by the shop I purchased my kit from and the Easton charts seemed to agree.

LMP

I certainly intend to have a go.

The techincal stuff is not a problem as I have a fairly good understanding of what is required and how you go about setting up the bow etc.

Have a great Christmas and New Year
