teaching scouts to shoot

More of a how do I than coaching I suppose, but here goes.

I've done a fair bit of scouting in my time and a friend has recently moved to a new troop. He's trying to entice me into scouting agian, and wondered if I'd like ot teach the little so and sos how to shoot.

Soooo.

What qualifications do I need to do just that then? Anyone got any experience in that? Or shopuld I just hide until he thinks of something else daft to do

I think its called a "leaders" course. You should probably be able to get details from the scouts organization.

Hi Beardy. Assuming you're not a coach the Blue Whale is right. I think that the Scouts would want you to have a Community Leader's Certificate for Archery. The certificate is recognised throughout the country by most sporting/youth organisations and you'd be qualified to teach beginners to shoot.

These courses are held regularly all over the place, usually by your County or Region. I would contact your County Coaching Organiser and see when the next one is due.

The scouts should be able to arrange suitable insurance for you.

The requirement is instructing 'to the standard of the Community Leader Award' so you would need that qualification or higher. If you need to be covered by Scout Association insurance you will also need a Scouting appointment - getting an Instructor certificate is the easiest. You'll also need a CRB check. Your friend's Group Scout Leader will organise all of that. But you know you don't want to stick at just being an Instructor - go on, get involved again and take out a Leader warrant. You know you want to!

Or if you want to PM me I can try and help sort out the specifics for you. You cant get away with just considering it you know!

Depending upon exactly where you are the Scout County may have access to the Archery Leaders course at very resonable cost

At this point I feel duty bound to say 'I've been there, done that, and got the tee shirts!' My scouting backround. Cub scout, scout (both 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale) ASL (2nd (Apollo) Menston), SL, GSL (both 5th Woodbridge (sea scouts)) I then managed to escape. My mate was ASL at the 5th, but is now ASL at the 13th Ipswich (seascouts) and is visiting ASL for a Warrick sea scout group. He's been trying to entice me back into scouting (I'm also a power boat, pulling boat and canoe instructor) but my wife has been resisting. The Warrick group already have loads of archer kit, though my involvement will mainly be with the 13th Ipswich as Mrs B would be REALLY upset if I started traveling over to warrick regualrly. I certainly wouldn't want to take anything other thatn an instructors ticket at he moment, as I asy I have experience of the slippery slope

In which case "Skills Instructor" is what you want to consider, which is a local appointment - not a warranted role. You would also want to become a Scout Association member or associate member in order to benefit from the SA insurance as GNAS insurance will not cover you in this role (many groups/districts would insist on paying that for you in return for a bit of instruction). The formalities would include CRB (a GNAS one wont do and viceversa), someone talking to you to ensure you are not about to start teaching bowhunting to 8 year olds and some introductory stuff about child protection and assessing risk in what you do. With your background it should be straightforward when the time is right.

Overdraw Recovery Method

1) Tell pupil not to panic
2) Maintain the full draw position
3) Bend forward at the waist (arrow pointing towards the ground)
4) Extend the draw so that the arrow can come free and fall away from the bow,
5) Let the bow down carefully

Better position to be in is not to have arrows that are too short...

I **think** what they are alluding to is in the event of overdraw bringing the arrow inside the rest the the bow being held drawn and pointed downwards so that the arrow/pile falls clear of the bowhand before relaxing the draw. I am not sure that term is used in the GNAS material though.

Or the better explanation by Meddler whilst I was typing!
