Does Eye Dominance Change

I’ve been shooting for about 18months, when we did the intro course I found I was left eye dominant so have learnt to shoot left handed. I have also learnt to shoot with both eyes open and think this maybe causing a problem

I’m shooting long national, at the 80yds I think the image from my right eye is complicating my sight picture as it has less to look at, where as my left eye is trying to concentrate on sight and target etc.

At 60yds the apparently larger target is helping my left eye sort the image out in my brain.

The question is does anyone else experience this?
Should I stick with two eyes open shooting hoping that with time and practice my brain will work it out?
Or should I go back to closing my non-dominant eye?

I know there is a first class archer in me trying to get out

I was always taught to use your dominant eye and if you can shut the other one. It works well for me. But this is something I got use to after full bore rifle shooting for 30 years.

I am sure that there are some benefits in using both eyes, but I have never discovered them.

It might be worth trying a translucent patch over the right eye.

Eye dominance can change with age or medical conditions, ie Diabetes. I think your dominant eye is taking over at certain distances, go back to shutting your "none dominant" eye and see if it helps

B.E. you might be right. I say your head stays eighteen forever. It's the body that lets you down.
At 48, I was told 7 months ago that I'm on the verge of needing my 1st pair of reading specs

My son's eye dominance seems to have changed over about 18 months (he is only 10 now). Strange. I don;t think it affected his shooting, since he does close the otehr eye.

Having said that he is just coming back off a lay-off having suffered TP badly.

Hope you get it sorted.

Your optician will be able to confirm your dominant eye - it isn't the same as which ones sees better (i'm most short sighted in my dominant eye). Those eye dominance tests aren't 100% reliably done on beginners course in my experience.
I expect there's many out there that are right-handed and right-eyed but shooting left handed cos somebody got it wrong - this is one of the reasons that going with eye dominance is not a good idea. Going with your hand has been argued as being the better thing to do anyway. Are you left-handed? [Edit - oh I see you are, sorry, so most likely you will/would have been be left eyed too].
Although I suspect it's too late to change easily now anyway.

Hi moo-mop

Actually I'm right handed just shoot left. I did have a little trouble getting used to left hand shooting but now feel my right hand can control the bow, better than my left ever could. ( Does that make sense?)

I'm right handed, I shoot air rifle right handed, 12 bore right handed, but recurve, compound and longbow/barebow left handed. I shoot right handed when coaching though!!

I can shoot with either hand, but I started on right hand, so I keep shooting like that. At have-a-goes etc I shoot left handed to have a bit of fun. I also sometimes shoot my compound either way round (right hand bow) just to say I can.
