Bow kick up on release

Recurve bow (70"), 30" long rod, no short rods. 30" draw 40lb on the fingers

I wasn't particularly aware of it, but one of the chaps on the line pointed it out to me yesterday.

On release there is a marked upward kick at the end of my long rod. Is this an issue? is it a kit problem, or a form problem. is it not a problem at all?

Some thoughts, check your tiller with challengers at least 3-4mm (bottom limb closer to the string)and nocking point and also make sure you are not pushing the bow upwards with the heal of your hand on release.

Try 5 to 6mm of tiller on top limb.

Do the tiller checks and set it as advised.See if that cures it. If not,add weights to the end of the long rod until the upwards kick is eliminated. When you have reached that situation, it might be worth checking how much weight was needed. If it is far more than the weight used by others shooting equipment that is much the same, it could be worth exploring further.

Check your hand position and check for consistency from shot to shot.

You might also want to consider a top-rod and perhaps v-bars (remember you'll also need an extender if you go the v-bar route).

I wonder at the need of an extender with a v-bar setup.

I don't have one and have done a static balance check and found the neutral balnce point to be about 1" in front of the riser, on the centre line of the pivot point, which I was led to believe to be close to ideal.

I need to update my profile, I've now got W&W Everest limbs The tiller is fine though as it was checked when I got them

However, the heel of the hand issue sounds interesting, as I do push my bow with my left hand, maybe I'm over doing it. I'll have do analyse it on Wednesday evening.

Interesting. I don't think my bow balances anywhere near there, I'm sure it's closer to the riser. Damn, I'm going to have tpo go and get it out now and put it together!

thanks for all the input

verry interesting

just been playing with my bow, and apart from the fact that pulling the damn thing seems so much harder when you're not shooting, the following was noted:

I DO push the bow with the heel of my hand, it's a habit I've developed to stop my hand from sliding up the handle. I will have to reapraise this, and perhaps consider a wotsit grip (jager?)

The point of bance is close to the riser, probably about 1cm out. this is stil in front of the grip by a bit, but I need to consider just where it needs to balance. I do like the slow roll forward that I currently enjoy, bu tif I need to add waight to stop it kicking up on release, then I'll have to get to like a different after release bow action.

BTW, how much should I worry about this? I suppose it's primarily a consistence thing?

*shrugs* Whatever works for you. Personally, I need at least a 4" extender PLUS a small top rod to get the balance right with my setup (and most setups, if you look along the line of any major event), perhaps the Browning has a different balance point.

Static balance is simply one quick test - the real test is the reaction of the bow when shot. YMMV etc!

The position of the bow balance point in front of the riser is mainly just a function of the weight of the riser - there is no "ideal" position. Dinna worry about it. As above it's the dynamic behaviour of the bow that matters.

Fitting a V bar system without an extender is like fitting bicycle tyres without putting air in them. Your choice - but it doesn't work so well.
