I wonder if it's related to what Psychologists call "flow"? That's to do with focus and losing the passage of time. Most of us get into that state (doing things like playing musical instruments, reading, driving...), I guess the trick is to figure out how to hit it while shooting.

My most striking memory of "the zone" was whilst fencing (and completely out of my league). I can remember being ready, with my head clear, in a kind of state of "passive readiness". Then the umpire said "play". I blinked and found I'd hit my opponent. I don't recall any intention to do it, just a sense of... euphoria, I guess you'd call it. That "out of your head" feeling. The other guy hadn't even moved - he seemed a little shocked. I still got pasted overall

There's an article by Lanny Bassham about "The Zone" in the latest Archery Focus. Will have a read later and see what it says...

I guess that it must, both for score & duration of performance.

I'd imagine that most of the (quiet) readers of this thread who can't claim runs of >115 dozens have had the experience of beginning a shot process & then "coming to" & realising that the arrow has gone & that it's in the middle of the 10 ring, without any consciousness of how it got there. If only that happened arrow after arrow it'd be an actual zone & not a zonelet.

The problem I see with searching for the Zone is that it is rarely a long term thing. As noted here most experiance it for a relativly short period of time (a dozen arrows) which while can give us some impressive scores (Adam's 579 with a miss is awesome) doesn't give us a win or a world record.
So what do people do to get themselves closer to that zone for all 144 or 60 arrows?

I've been working on trying to get everything to be subconscious. I tend to shoot my best scores when I am in a state of mental exhaustion (not physical as this impedes my scores) and my mind doesn't have a chance to think about things too much. I let the shooting get on with itself and the scores will follow.
However, the times I have been able to truly get in the zone, I wasn't overly tired or stressed. But they were in times when I had been training a great deal and my body knew the movements without me thinking about it. When it becomes second nature to do things exactly the same, I think that is when I start to get closer to it.

The zone

would it be fair to say that another description of the zone is when u are happy with your shooting although you are not scoring 10 every time
i shoot more for the enjoyment and the pleasure and sometimes i feel happy with my shooting and when i do it is sometimes because the action /my form flows together and i release smoothly and everythingfeels right but only in myself not always in the end result
to put it another way i sometimes feel as good about my shooting scoring 6 whites if everything has flowed as i do scoring 6 golds if it hasnt
