National Coaching Conference

I was at Lilleshall over the weekend, along with one or two other members of the AIUK board... viz bkupris, Bald Eagle, and 7,3 Miss... I don't know if anyone else from the board was there.

As usual a packed weekend, and this year the conference was packed full of goodies.

Dave Clarke, OlLie Holt and Bil Mackay were all giving presentations on their areas of expertise, in COACHING DEVELOPMENT.

Matt Cleland from the States going through compound bows
Michelle Cleland doing Nutrition
Massimo Vencato doing Coping strategies to help with your motivation.
Peter Suk on the performance unit (assisted by Tim and Tom Barber)
Peter Suk on technique
Ken Bearman on Aids for better Coaching
Lynne Evans on the View from the Chair

The rollout for the Level 2 Coach courses was done at the Conference. Level 2 Courses will start in April 2008, with Registrations opening in February 2008.

People will be trained up to take the new courses early in the New Year (ie Tutors, Moderators and Assessors).

On CRBs : there is now no longer a requirement to have another CRB check on completion of a Coaching course. The CRB will be allowed to run its normal three years. However, it is the Coach's responsibility to get the CRB done and sent in to the GNAS office (Recorded delivery is best).

There is also a push on to get more Coaches in, so that the Society doesn't run out of Coaches (especially at Senior level).

Now all I need to do is get some sleep...

Iain.

Sounds like a really good weekend. When will the presentations etc be promulgated to us poor lot who couldn't get to the conference and want to improve our techniques?

Yes, sounds fun - I presume next year's is already booked up with people signing-up on site. Or does anyone actually get told about this in time?

Delegates have been promised a CD with all the presentations on the so I can’t see any reason why we can’t pass them on to those who are interested. However, the PowerPoint’s in isolation will probably not be of much use. Matt Clelands Compound stuff can be found at

Shooting the Compound Bow for Fita

I will be honest and say that there was nothing new or revolutionary shown or discussed. At times it came from a new and fresh angle but the information is already out there in one form or another. You can ask a question of Peter Suk or you can ask a GNAS Coach and the answer will be the same!!!

That’s not to say I didn’t learn a few new coaching techniques and more than anything it re-enforced my belief that what we as GNAS coaches do is very much in line with not only the Performance Unit and Squad but also the rest of the world.

It is put on the GNAS website and also (I think) in AUK.
You are best to speak to the organizer Alastair Robinson or head office and get your name on the e-mail list. I am pretty sure the Conference is announced in April and bookings are not taken before this. You will need to be quick as places fill up in the first few days. Leave it longer than a week and you will be on a waiting list.

Although it is a Coaching conference I don’t think you have to be a Coach to go. My honest opinion though is that if you are going for any other reason than to improve your coaching you will probably be disappointed.

Cheers

Andy

I think you are probably right!!

I wonder how many people wanted to attend but did not get a place? If it was quite a few then it is possibly time to sort out a bigger venue.

There must be somewhere we could use that will accomodate everyone that wants to go. Any suggestions???

Andy

TYhis has been a problem for at least 15 years long before GNAS moved to Lilleshall. when the offices were moved we coaches were all looking forward to a bigger venue and more people attending. Sadly it never materialised.there must be other national Sports Centres or conference centres capable of host 200+ delagates with reasonable accommodation nearby. How about the NECC - huge conference rooms and the whole of the West midlands for accommodation. Or the National Sports Centre outside High Wycombe (used for football?) lots of accommodation around there too.

Probably quite high. But the current situation should not be allowed to continue. The fact that there is a waiting list every year should, by now have prompted changes to the way this National conference is run. I have the feeling that there are a core of regular attendees who get their names down every year very quickly and it could be assumed that because these coaches are staisfied nothing needs to be done. However there is a call for more and more coaches and this situation is likely to get worse as the waiting lists grow longer, especially in the light of the need for CPD. Maybe the organisers will award one CPD point for each year a coach gets on the waiting list but fails to get to the conference? At least they were showing a desire to improve their skills even though they were prevented from doing so by the poor venue arrangements imposed by the organisers.Your comment could be taken as quite negative
