Length vs Strength

As a longbow shooter I thought of posting this in the traditional section, and then thought I might get a wider spread of points of view in this section. Forgive me if this is an FAQ, but I have tried searching the forum and got nowhere, probably because the search terms are too common.

Recently I have noticed that my draw length has dropped a little, but is more consistent, and I wondered where the balance lies between "going for the burn" and wringing every possible bit of power out of the bow? Not an issue indoors, or out to 60yds, but beyond that a bit of extra zip makes a big difference to sight marks...

I would think your draw length should be determined by proper form. If you need more performance, use a heavier bow or go to lighter arrows, don't pull further back. Archery, be it traditional long bow or modern recurve is about consistency. One thing that has to be consistent is the draw, and yes it does make a difference at both 20 and 60 yards.

Hi,

I shoot longbow and asian horse bow, the only advice I can give is shoot what is comfortable for you to draw and hold, and adjust accordingly. I have tried heavy draw bows and light draw bows, with different spine rated arrows. Eventually you will find what is perfect for you. I appreciate this all sounds a little ambiguous, but unfortunately that is how it is?
