Recording Equipment for Coaching

Has anyone any experience with hard drive recorders and using them for coaching. Do they give the facility for still picture reproduction and more important the facility to shuttle the picture back and forwards frame by frame. This latter facility tends to be poor and not easy to use with DVD recorders although of course they give a perfect still picture.

I bought a Sony HDR SR8E to help analyse form.

It's a high definition recorder with a 100GB hard disk (Sony claim 34.5hrs of video) - I've had it about 6 months and so far haven't had to delete/archive anything.

It doesn't (appear) to have frame-by-frame playback mode but it does support slo-mo which is more than enough for me (roughly 1/5 real time playback). It can also record approx. 3 secs in super slow motion (probably good to analyse release) but I've not used this yet.

A very good investment (and so much easier to use than the sony handcam I had previously which was great but you had to constantly wind/rewind the tape to find what you were looking for). With this, you just select the thumbnail for the clip you want and play - excellent.

I haven't bothered yet to transfer to DVD (but I'm going to need to soon as we're using it in our coaching group and others are going to want to take their clips home).

Simon

Camcorder Analysis for Coaching

Hi,

This sounds like a terrific set of sports analysis kit!

Motion Analysis, Video Motion Capture and Video Analysis Software - Sports Motion Company Info

They sell an instructional CD for about $15

https://id309.securedata.net/sports-...products_id=46

It seems to be based on a mini DV camcorder.

You can buy just the software if you already have the necessary hardware.

I bought a Panasonic GS 400 and a Sony Viao which I use for my coaching, but I haven't yet been able to justify the extra expense of the Sports motion software up to now.

I'll have to sweet talk my "Boss".

I'd like to hear if anyone has used this software.

Thanks for info Simon. Can you play the Slo-MO in reverse then forward to repeat a particular section with ease

We're using this software (or something like it) here in Scotland. I'mgoing to be renewing my acquaintance with it this weekend.

Miles cheaper than Dartfish, and one of our Senior Coaches reckons it's a darn sight more useful.....

Some of you may not have seen my description of how to use a computer, a webcam & some free software to do this kind of thing. Good for self coaching too

We have this software and use it with a DVD camcorder. It isn't really suited to archery except for running two sessions side by side so you can compare release etc. The tools are fairly straight forward to use but of course it is only as good as the recorded material. We have also found it best to convert the clips from our camcorder outside of the program and then import them.

I think it is very good value for the side by side function alone, you can mark two clips at the same start point - for example the point the release aid is triggered and then compare the two frame by frame.

Like anything, if you have a good camcorder, tripod and you take time with it then it could be OK. I don't however think it would be worth going and buying a setup specifically to use this software.

In fairness, the info does say that dvd cameras are no good for this process and only mini dv should be used. Do you think the "usefulness" to archers would be improved under these circumstances or are you saying that video coaching is basically not worth it anyway?

Like original poster, I am interested in this product at at under $1000 seems good value

SAA uses Motionview Advanced Coach (Video analysis software, video motion analysis software, golf swing software, video analysis systems and software.)

You can set up dual camcorders and record from different angles simultaneously
You can do quad-screen playback
You can shuttle back and forward easily.
You can annotate/draw on live video.
You can save/reload video.

I'm not convinced it's as good as dartfish from what I've seen and some of the interface is *extremely* clunky and 1990s. It also appears to be relatively buggy... but the bugs are minor. Having said all that, things it DOES do well makes it value for money and I find it a very useful tool.

I think this particular software is more suited to Golf or baseball where there is an object that can be measured such as the swing of a golf club.

I have a mini-dv and get better results with the mini-dvd as it is HD IMHO

Best thing is to have a look next time we bump into each other - County indoors maybe. It is on Wendy's laptop, same one we use for scoring.
