| For us far from good archers that do not have access to top coaches JP has written rather nice little book(s) that are full of the whys of things - understanding why is a good motivator as far as I am concerned as it helps us to think about what we are doing. [edit: being told what to do would have it's place - mainly making life far easier - but wouldn't always be great as doing something without understanding means it's far more difficult to implement, I'm a scientist/engineer and I have to understand the problem before I can fix it]

| Because that's how I operate. How your coach works may vary.

If Jim thought that it was imperative for me to change bows, i would do it. I might prefer an explanation, but i don't require one because I trust my coaches 100% and i know that no change is made without extensive testing and discussion. If you don't trust your coach, they aren't your coach. They're some person you converse with. |

| Although I'm a long way from your level I have been told the same but I have to operate this way as I'm my own coach! I've edited my original post to make it more clear.

| The real beauty is when the two opinions are from world class experts. That makes life very tough. That's why there's no point in having a coach that you don't trust... too many opinions in the kitchen and all that. |

| Any coach or sports instructor in any sporting field must have one thing, Credibility, without it they will not be believed and the value of their opinions will degraded. In this case the coach should be able to explain the reason for the change in the riser in a manner which the student understands. Coaching is first and foremost about communication. You can be the best in the world but if you can't put it over you are useless.

oh no. There are many examples of titanic clashes of opinion in the upper echelons of archery.Yes a good coach should be able to communicate. But a good student should have complete trust in their coach. There are actually a lot of aspects to shooting that you will not understand until you have actually achieved them, no matter how well explained it is. I am a complete advocate of understanding every aspect of your technique and gear. But i also trust my coach to tell me what and when i need to know. What's the point in going to a coach with world class credibility if you think you know better?? It is a classic case of people asking questions just to hear the sound of their own voice. Why go to the best and then try and tell them how to do it? |

| I cannot agree more with what Erika just wrote! Why waste time asking pointless questions when you can get on with what you're told and achieve more. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
