Why compensator button?

You have your coaching hat on and an archer puts the following to you "If I can hit the gold with my longbow why do I need a compensator button on my recurve?" What would you say to that one?

"You don't".....like you don't 'need' a sight, stabilisers or a rest (or indeed a clicker ), but all of these things are there to help remove the inherent inconsistency of a stick and a variable archer on the back of it.

It depends if you want to hit more than one gold or not.

You could say, "If you can hit the gold with your longbow, why shoot the recurve?"
Seriously,I think the answers to that question would probably answer the original one too.

Probably because modern recurve bows have been designed to work better with a button etc than without them. particularly as the sight window is now cut way over centre on most risers.

Tell them to try putting their arrow in the gold at 90m - consistently

As long as the arrow is held in the right place it's not ABSOLUTELY necessary to have a compensator button. Last year I shot a 720 with my button set to rock solid... the groups were actually ok! I heard a story about some top archer shooting with a nail rather than a button, but that may simply be urban legend.

No, what I was doing was part of a tuning thing... the story refers to an archer using a nail in competition.

Hello Brian
I like your style asking this question here:
I thought it might be something to do with the longbow being solid and the arrow being off set from the centre. But on a recurve the sight window is cut away moving the arrow past the centre and there for a button would be used to put the arrow back past the centre of the bow. This would then help compensate for the bending of the arrow when shot.
But I am as puzzled as you are with the question we were sat.
Andrew

So this is a question posed in your County course then?
