| bare shaft As a fairley new archer (7 months ) I have been some what errattic in my progress due to conflicting advice, all which was given with the best intentions and a good heart . I am slowly picking out the good from the bad , my latest conundrum is the distance for bare shaft tuning , I have read different articles where distances vary from 7 meters up to thirty meters for this method .What is the general consencess on the optimum distance for this method . I have a 70 " recurve 38 pound limbs 44 pounds measured at my draw length. |

| thanks, prior to this i did the bare shaft at 10 meters but am not convinced it was a success . |

| IMO bareshaft at a few distances to make sure your results are not anomalous. My faves are 18m, 30m, 50m and finally 70m, but only if I'm shooting pretty well will I go above 30m.

| 10-12m is plenty unless you can shoot over 1200 and over 18m only with barreled shafts

| can you all see the conundrum developing , it must be a very individual thing , I was hoping to see a pattern develope that I could pick a mean distance to work, with thanks to all . |

| For bare shaft testing (or any other tuning) to be successful it is mandatory that you be able to shoot a good group. If your form is not consistent enough to shoot a good group at at least 18 m then the results aren't going to tell you much. I suspect part of the reason you are getting so many different answers is there is a lot of variation in the distance at which people can shoot well enough for the bare shaft testing to be meaningful. As a side note, shooting 44# after only 7 months is probably hurting more than helping. Virtually every coach, instructor and experienced archer I know or have read suggests starting between 30-35 pounds on the fingers until you learn form...and learn it well enough to shoot the groups referred to above. | Agree with the above, the ability of shooting good groups is paramont. I shoot first at 20, then 30, then 50, then 70 and finally 90. 30 should be plenty but I like to confirm my results with the longer distances too. |

| It depends what you're doing the bareshaft for. To check nocking point, close distance 8-10m say. To tune bow to arrows, at least two distances, but whatever is convenient. (8-10m and 18m is generally convenient.) To check arrow spine, every 5m up to 30m. To measure windspeed above hedge level, distances above 30m. John |
