probably a stupid question, but quite an important one if i'm to start doing this: wouldn't holding the limbs at full draw for this long potentially damage them?

Good Sir Pete - No. MIght do if you're using a longbow or older wood limbs, but modern limbs are no problem.

So what are reversals????

As per the subject. I don't actually know what reversals are, so could someone enlighten me

As I understand it, it is a set of exercise where you draw your bow (preferably without your arrow) hold at full draw then come down. The times and numbers can be varied (see Murray earlier). That way you build up the archery-specific muscles and stamina you need.
Not a hint of reversing as the English speaking world understands the term

To protect finger joints (and remove the risk of accidental loose), you use a formaster.

It has had no adverse effect at all on my Border limbs, which are eight years old, have been shot thousands of times, used for hundreds of reversals and still weigh the the same as the day I bought them.
