| Been through this, I coach at a leisure centre, out of the 4 of us teaching 3 were already leaders when we started, but since the local centre is so committed to archery (they now only shoot rolans, kaps and equiv.) that we all qualified as coaches last year. The local high school now sends kids along for 2 sessions/week The idea is to create interest in archery and we encourage the keenest shooters to join our local 4 clubs (Longbow, Field, & 2 gnas ) My club doesn't take any new members so the other clubs get the full benefit It's been a long process but I think we're now getting there with 15 -25 archers turning up to shoot each week and are starting to join the local clubs (but they still make time to shoot with us.. which is great!) We also have a few special needs adults that are regulars too,so it's a good mix of people and we always have a good time. Plus with the bonus of having a minimum of 3 gnas coaches on duty each week we have the time to help where it's needed withour sacrificing our own shooting time too much I think that people should be encouraged to promote archery providing they do it in a safe way. |

| We are continously complaining that we are a minority sport and then when a local council tries to promote our sport we are then complaining about it! The leaders course teaches how to shoot safely first and secondly, how to get your arrow on target in the easiest way possible. It might not encourage you how to shoot in the best way but to get results quickly. Anyone coming to your club after the 10 week course will be safe to shoot alongside. If you want them to do the 6 week course they already have a head start, maybe rename it a coaching course so they dont get put off by the beginner's label. |

| After the leisure centre has run a couple of beginners courses they might have enough interest run their own club nights. Will they insist that GNAS members do the leisure centre's 10 week course to prove they are safe to shoot? ![]() |

What is this "red feather award" and hat does it signify? How can it "entitle" anyone to join any GNAS club almost all of which are, by any definition, private. Gripe over. I agree with those who suggest that you forge some links with your local sports centre. Someone there is doing us a favour by promoting our sport. You might get some good archers or fun members out of it - or both.

| IIRC GNAS does not require persons do a beginners course in order to become a member. Beginners courses are an option for clubs to take on persons and give them some tuition and be covered by GNAS insurance before they actually join GNAS or the club. Technically any club can sign up a total novice and organise GNAS membership for them before they have shot a single arrow. If a local leisure centre has an Archery Leader or GNAS Coach running courses for novices IMHO they are doing the local clubs a huge favour. I would be delighted if every new person interested in joining our club had been through such a course at the local leisure centre before approaching us ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

My club has Stag Awards, which are made up but basically shows a newbie can reach the minimum distance for a junior round. They are then "entitled" to shoot on target day, which basically means they won't slow people up and will actually be able to shoot a round. It's quite a good motivator as the newbies want to outshoot each other.
