Archery Diet

Leading on from a different thread (http://www.archery-interchange.com/f...-caffeine.html)
I was wondering what people ate before and during competitions and why?

I'm going to miss my bacon butties at shoots

Because I have diabetes, I've learned how a fluctuation in my blood sugar can mess up my shoot. I ALWAYS have breakfast (porridge or muesli) with a slow-release energy smoothie about three hours before. I try to drink a litre of water in the hour before shooting. While shooting a Portsmouth, for example, I'll drink another two litres of water or Volvic Revive, which I cope well with. I'll have a banana before I shoot and exactly half way through. At that point I will also nibble a date, nut and seed bar. I also make sure I drink a litre of water or beverage during the hour after the shoot, followed by a light snack.

One other things I learned this indoor season, was that I had been skipping my midday diabetes medication, which really messed up my blood sugar. Now I make sure I take it as appropriate.

That's why clicki has such a large case...have you seen her lunch box?!

I eat...normally, really. Cerial of some description for breakfast, sipping through the morning, sandwich, crisps and a chocolate bar for lunch, sipping again during the afternoon, then a BBQ in the evening outdoors.

Indoors, I don't tend to do anything different. In practice I generally always shoot at least 6-7doz, if not more. 5 doz isn't really an issue...

Sounds about right for my next shoot, it's the wifes birthday the day before the HAA indoor championships... Hmm, I don't think my score for a portsmouth will be wonderful on the 9th

out of comp i run on 1-2 meals tops with no snacking. mostly salads and protein and a tiny amount of carbs.

in comp i eat like a pig. 3 meals with snacks. i don't think i shoot more than two ends without eating. and i usually start the eating extra a day before. i drink a bottle of gatorade or the equivalent and continuously top it off with water. there's always beef jerky and some kind of low fat carb snack in my kit. muesli bars and such are always on hand.

the hard bit is going back to a fraction of that the following day. i'm always hungry for the week after.

Actually, my coolbag is quite tiny. Two bananas and a muesli bar is hardly a lot. The liquid takes up more space than anything.

No, because the HAA champs has been cancelled

I usually just empty the fridge.
What I can not force down prior to the shoot, I take it with me and eat it throughout the day.

I also take a flask of tea, a flask of coffee and plenty of water.

outdoors I have found it best to snack through the day so I start with breakfast of cereal, banana and any other soft fruit in the fridge. Instead of saving my lunch for the mid day break I will spread out my rations (usually one and a half sandwiches and a banana) eating the first half sandwich after the first 36 arrows. I have found eating it all at lunch time draws away energy for the start of the afternoon session.
One more tip to use with care is the end of day sugar hit if you are realy struggling in the last dozen. mini marshmellows are good for this but remember the fix is short lived.

That's why i just eat constantly in comp. pretty much always chewing on something on the way to collect arrows... The sheer volume of food i eat throughout a comp day is quite impressive... if you just eat small amounts all the time, you don't get highs and lows.
