Cheap High Speed Digital Imaging

High Speed Digital cameras such as the Sportscam currently cost US$8800 for 500FPS imaging.

Casio have just announced the EXILM Pro EX-F1 which will cost US$999 in March. Still a lot of money but for a County or Regional Coaching setup it could be a good buy. The specs are amazing:

Casio today announced its EXILIM EX-F1 - a six megapixel camera with 12x zoom and some very impressive burst shooting capabilities. Capturing up to 60 frames per second at full resolution and a staggering 1200 fps if you drop the image size to 336 x 96, this innovative camera will also shoot 1920 x 1080 Full HD movies at 60fps. Helping to ensure the moment isn't missed is a buffer system which continually updates then saves the contents to card when the shutter is released. Illumination is taken care of by a conventional strobe which works at up to 7 fps and a cellphone-style LED for 10-60 fps. The EX-F1 will be available from March 2008 priced at $999.99.

Could be an interesting investment for clubs. I know for one some high speed analysis of my form would be most appreciated.

I love toys and gadgets, and the chance of getting my hands on high-speed kit would be great. I wonder though how much is to be gained by going to high speed kit.

There is an awful lot that can be done with normal video recording. And much of the damage in terms of bad form is done at very slow speed!

At the higher speeds you would be able to get great video of arrow clearance as well as form.... saving up now

That would be seriously useful. Hmmm...if we can squeeze in an extra 30 beginners this year, that might fund a purchase...

I think I may stick with the free option of borrowing the wife's lipstick to check for contact at the moment. Like I said I love toys, but £700-£1000 (by the time you put the UK premium on) may take some persuading from the money manager

you have to be quite careful with lighting, and also the actual size of the image - how much would you see in a 336 x 96 film?

You could focus it on a small area - the draw elbow or the draw hand perhaps to see what is going on during the release.

Probably at the highest speed and smallest size you would focus on just the arrow rest area. At say 600 fps. still really fast, you could get the release action or finger release with reasonable detail. Even the US$8,800 camera at 500fps for 14 seconds records at 320 x 240.

600 frames per second....300 foot per second compound....

roughly 6 inches of arrow travel between frames...

maybe OK?
