Hi JohnR,
I agree with what you have said. It all makes good sense the way you explained it.
My point was really connected to the level1 course and not comparing it with any other courses.
Assuming the level1 course has an intake of archers; some will be new to archery, some will be far less so. The more you know at the start; the less there is to learn during a short course. I was also assuming that an archer who has shot for a good few years could have been "coaching" in an unqualified way, but still have learnt some of the skills and confidence required to coach.
I know that some archers can shoot for years and help others without learning much. That's life!

John,

Speaking as an Assessor for Leader courses, I have failed people before for not being up to scratch. Also there are people who have passed who have pulled the irons out of the fire on the day, who previously have been shocking on the course.

The Assessor can only go on what they see on the day.

Iain.

The people on the Leader's course will generally be running what is basically a Have-a-Go for people who want to try archery for a couple of hours max at Centre Parcs or a scout camp. They will not have a lot of time to do much other than getting people shooting with an adequate style and safely. Just think of the first session of a beginners course. There is probably not much time to teach anything other than three fingers under and so on. A lot of the people having a go are unlikley to return.

I disagree with this statement.
I know of several leaders who teach, week in week out, to the same(ish) group of people, either in leisure centres or scout groups.

Last night I went through my assesment - and passed my Level 1 course. The amount of work to be done could not possibly be covered in a period of 4 days. Doing practical coaching over the 12 month period being watched by your 'Mentor' is invaluable, I would not have passed if I had not taken this route.
