Personally I was trained barebow, then a couple of weeks later put on a pin 'sight', then on the proper thing.
When I've been training students I usually ask whether they want to try with a sight after a couple of sessions, but I'm always wary as doubtlessly the first few arrows will miss the target and that's very costly when you're down to the clubs last few straight arrows!

When you move onto sights are you measuring the difference between eye and jaw, then transferring this between the sight and arrow rest?

We have very few misses when we do this; also check the angle of the arrow as the beginner draws and references, this should also help.

I keep an eye on where the arrow's pointing, but as I myself haven't used a sight in years I'm not sure about setting one up for the first time other than somewhere near the middle with the squidgy trainer bows!

We put sights on at week 2 and rarely have people miss the target but if they do its no big deal also if people want to revert back to barebow after trying a sight thats no big deal either the archer has to be comfortable shooting a bow their way nothing should be forced upon them, just as everyone has their own shooting style or shot sequence to get the arrow to the target if you remember that you wont go wrong.

We put sights on from the beginning. We teach the beginners to line the sight up with the gold and not to look at the arrow. We also tell them not to worry about adjusting them to begin with as the coaches will do the adjustment for them. We teach them how to adjust the sight on week 3
This works very well. We don't get many misses, and this way we don't have to change their anchor point midway through a course. We will teach barebow if someone insists, but advise them to finish the beginner's course first

Daniel

I learnt from day one, no arrow one with a sight. I was sure that I was going to shoot with a sight because of the better accuracy. At the moment I shoot at a club where the sight is not introduced until far too late. As a result I see a lot of what I call barebowitus. The symptoms of barebowitus are , lack of confidence in the sight, persistant high elbow ( cause by drawing to the higher anchor point on the face) ,hunched forward stance, clearance problems (that don't come to light because side of the face is further out from the body and bow arm) , bad head position, bad string picture and a tendancy push the anchor down with the chin rather than draw to the correct anchor point.

I've also seen all of that with guys that wanted a sight on straight away. If it's a choice beween ruining their fun by 'de-barebowing' them straight away or trying slowly to correct them over a period of time. I choose the latter, as it's their archery, and so long they're doing their best, aware of what they should be doing, having a good time and don't hurt themselves ..(or each other ) then I'm happy.

The serious ones usually shine through anyway and it's them that join the clubs

I couldn't actually say yes or no, as I don't have a copy of the FITA one to compare, but the GNAS one has its own copyright on it??????

Whichever, it is very good.
