I run one or two courses a year, & also help out at the clubs' course.

My method:
I get the newbies to shoot without a sight for the first half of the first lesson... Point,Pull,Let go of the string. Have fun & get to know the bow. This I find relaxes the archer. The second half is then shooting with a sight. I have found that in the past, switching to a sight after a week or two tends to put the archer off, "I don't like using sights" is often heard after one or two ends.

Club method:
Sight on & shoot...get used to it, week three often used to be "Barebow" style "Field shoot" & clout. This years course could be interesting, we are reducing the beginner's course to 4 weeks from 6. The reason? Pass... I was not at the meeting when it came up.

speaking as a beginner, i had initially done a 6 week course with one of the local club coaches, shooting barebow, 3 fingers below, no sight at all and on the first night we just shot into a blank boss. but since joining my nearest club, ive been introduced to a sight and shooting using a split release, which im finding far better as i know have what i consider to be a proper point of reference to aim with
