Thanks Marcus, this is excellently put:

Because it is random this will take place
1) You will get good days causing bigger scores, and bad days causing lower scores.
2) You will never ever get that situation where the release has activated and you have moved correctly enough to shoot 100% of the times into the X.

As an ex-engineer I can relate only too well to randomness (or what I would call noise) and your explanation explains excellently my inconsistent shooting. It also explains something else. At the moment of release I know exactly where the dot is aiming. There are times I know at release it has just slipped out of the outer ten and that is exactly where the arrow ends. I don't mind these times so much and usually say to myself "the arrow has gone exactly where I sent it!". I know if I could always have these times it would simply be a case of making sure I send it to the right place! There are other times when at release I know I am on the X and end up with a 2 o'clock 8. I hate these times!

Thanks to your explanation I can better appreciate why they are happening so that gives me something to work on too.

I have now got enough to work on so its time to stop thinking about it and start putting some of these great suggestions into place.

[quote=Reg;219812]Good thread - really useful info.
Anyone got any tips how to do all the above while avoiding using back tension at all? !!!
I took up compound as due to an (unrelated to archery) injury I've ended up with a incurable trapped nerve in my neck. Shooting recurve properly is impossible and I thought compound with a 'dead' release, while not ideal, would a least keep me on the shooting line.

have you tried Pilates for the neck?

Update on what worked.

I have now tried various methods suggested above over the last few weeks and thought I would give some feedback.

First thanks for everyone for their suggestions.

The methods I found most successful were a combination of Marcos and Archery Mum. IE stiffening the srpings on my release and using back tension instead of punching the release. I am not completely cured yet because I still lapse back to punching on occassions and it can go horribly wrong. But things are heading in the right direction and I am confident in the long run things should work out better by taking this advice.
