Malcolm's Arrow Advice

A good point Dave and one which has been concerning me as I progress through the beginners course and continually refine my list of equipment that will suddenly turn me into that star archer!!! ( I expect we all felt that way once)

In reading the various threads like this one on Interchange I have absorbed a lot of information and from my original 'high flying' thoughts of spending the first £1000, have reduced the 'wish list' to something more modest, yet still in my opinion reasonably good.

The idea of a good recurve riser to start with and possibly retain, coupled with lower cost limbs to change when strength and style have improved sufficiently are still there and being 6''2 - age 67 - draw weight only about 32# and draw length 29" I feel that a 68" or 70" may be appropriate.

Latest thoughts -( still refining) - are the Samick set up (Athlete and matching limbs) - the new Pro-Accent looks good to me with say KAP Challenger limbs, or original thoughts were Hoyte Nexus and Stratix limbs, but I have yet to get the 'feel' of these in my hands and that's the next step before fine tuning (pardon the pun).

Price packages between £320 and £400, which I feel would get me into good starting position with ample space to upgrade later on.

Last beginners lesson next week, so my card is starting to twitch and I do not want to continue using the club bow only when I attend, since I want more practice at home.

Any help would always be appreciated.

Good Arrows

Malcolm

FWIW I would suggest you spend your money on good arrows. I think they make more difference than most decent quality risers/limbs. Only my humble opinion... ie. ace's or similar

Arrows

Thanks for the input but I have already budgeted for XX75 Platunium initially - say 2 dozen, then upgrading with another say £200 + budget and I am understanding where the 'continuing' cost does go!!

Hopefully I will be guided by the coach and intend to make great demands on his time for some time if he's willing!

Good (worthy) arrows

Malcolm

Malcolm are you planning on trying to have a go at some outdoor Fita's or just sticking with the shorter distances? Apologies we may be getting a bit off topic

Lead me to the Targets !!!!

I expect that a few weeks wll be needed improving on shorter targets then 'let me loose! However, perhaps 70m & 90m may be a bit optomistic for a while. I will be guided by the coach, but it was interesting to have a go at a 90m target yesterday. The range is ok but with the gusty winds I did not hit the target - came a couple of feet to the side.

Is there a particular supplier, say for xx75 G-nock complete with quickspins that gives great big discounts, or 'shop around' for best deal?

Off to watch the 23rd American at Meridan Club this afternoon. The snow is clearing fast and I am looking forward to seeing a competition.

Malcolm

Malcolm - you'll hopefully get advised only to get a dozen XX75. You may find that when you're only left with 7 useable arrows that its time to "go up poundage" on your limbs and then you'll need a different spine of arrow.

Don't use quickspins outdoors - the finding is that they slow the arrow down quicker so they don't give optimum speed to the longer distances. You can search the threads on here, I'm sure its been discussed several times.

Just get them fletched with Plastifletch or such, and I get my arrows from Aardvark and let them fletch them for me even though I can do my own - as they make a great job Their prices are very competitive.

Thanks Muriel,

Appreciate the advise and would probably start with a dozen, but do appreciate that the spine needs changing when weight changes and possibly draw length.

Good point on the fletches though, I hadn't though about that one but in the first few weeks/months, may be staying on shorter range to get accuracy .... but then again ......... competing will be fun.

Yesterday we had 3" of snow and I thought that the 23rd American at Meriden may be off, but the sunshine came to the rescue and there was a good turnout, so although cold, it was a glorious day to be shooting and I was pleased to see the competition but had to leave early.

Hope you have a good season shooting

Malcolm

Learn the skills of your archery...do not try to buy them.

Thanks, but skills have never been for sale, they have to be obtained through hard work, dedication and the ability to absorb knowledge. These I have - even at my late age!

The right equipment, where needed, can only help and 'possibly' give a slight edge in the process.

Good arrows
