With me it's either the first three after sighters (at one tournament this year I shot six tens with sighters and then shot 10 9 8) or the third dozen (Wakefield 120,120,115).

I thought about this whilst shooting last evening - maybe too hard! First end was the best of the round, but steady through to end seven which was awful, then pretty average (for me) 'til the end. This is in contrast to my norm, which is three dozen 'sighters', then 'catch-up'!

Exactly right Astinus...........the phenomenon is your brain forcing you back into your comfort zone. There are a few good sport related mental training books that can help you around this well known problem.

Can't recall the name of any just at the minute, but I am sure someone on here will remember some.

Good point Astinus- I also have that problem- I'd like to know some strategies (or GeoffT's books) for fixing it!

I had a brief flirtation with this, but as internal interference, at a training day.

We were shooting 18 arrow head to heads indoors. First pairing was with one of the better archers in the county - usually better than me, for sure. He was having a bad day & I was after blood! No contest & quite a good score too.

Then I got put against a 16 yr old girl. She's good, for her age. There was a little internal mental tussle, while I decided whether to go for it, or hold back, for her self esteem. Then I got started & my subconscious took over the shooting - I got the same score as I did for the previous round Funnily enough she was more impressed with my score than she was disappointed with hers.

I've stopped worring about being "fair" to other archers now - I shoot against myself, or a score if I have to.
