IMO "being fair" to others is doing your damndest to beat them. Going easy on someone is unethical, you're not playing the game by the rules

In a training situation it's a little different.... I remember my old fencing coach would let you through in a "I've got to get 10 hits while you get 5" training session, so that you ended up losing 10-4... Really got you going, trying to get that extra point so that you could beat him for once...
