Goal setting

Following some comments Archery_mum made on her blog I have been rethinking my approach to the mental side of archery After spending quite a lot of time reviewing the techniques I use I feel my weakest area is goal setting I seem to swing from setting one big goal and working away at it,To setting several small(stepping stones) goals to achive a big goal. I feel this needs to stop I should just use one method or the other.
So Im looking for any advice, what works best for you ? do you use a totally differnt method ,Im leaning towards the stepping stone approach at the minute but is this the best way ?

I found the stuff by Tim very good

However, using Tim's model I evaluated what I thought one of my goals would be this year. The end result was that I realised that it wasn't as important as I thought and I was not prepared to put in the effort I thought it required. Strangely after Sunday's shoot perhaps it was not ambitious enough or the fact that dismissing the goal as too much like hard work had taken the pressure away and made it more attainable

I've set a number of (hopefully) achiveable goals for this season, and everytime I get one I'm allowed a treat (for instance, I already have made one, so I've bought a new bow case).

I remember an expression, used by a psychologist, talking about goal setting. "Bring the future nearer", he said.
He explained that a goal with a fruition date too far in the future was very difficult to get excited about. In that situation he suggested it is better to work out where you will have to be in half that time. And in three months, one month, next week! The improvement needed in one week's time, is far more exciting. And working on smaller steps, gives an earlier indication of progress.Once a little progress has been made, it can generate the atmosphere to continue with the treatment.
