I hope I still have it somewhere - I'll dig it out and see what was said (well reported anyway!!).

I found the magazine I was looking for. Issue #1 of Archery International (Feb 1980) that has an interview with Pace & McKinney.
I quote:
AI: How did you feel when you broke the world record in Japan? Were you going for the record specifically or did it just happen?
DP: Well, I had not shot for about two or three weeks prior to the meeting. I shot about 20 or 30 arrows in practice the night before I left and I arrived at one o'clock on the morning of the tournament and got up at 6 o'clock to shoot. I did not truly have any flight settings because I had just bought some new flights I was trying out. I started out with practice and the first three arrows, I think, missed the target so, as you can see I was not really prepared for the shooting of the record. The weather was perfect, no wind, sunny, the field was great, the match was good and Rick McKinney was my biggest incentive. We both started out shooting very well, after I had got my flight set in practice. I started with 55 and Rick started with 56. One thing led to another and I said 'Well, I'm shooting good today' but I still had no thought at the time of breaking the world record.
Pace shot 312 + 333 + 340 + 356 = 1341
in November 1979 !!!
