| Perhaps a good analogy regarding coaching is driving instruction. When you are first learning you go to a normal driving instructor who charges about £25 an hour (no idea if that is correct so don't flame me if it is actually £23 an hour) this gives you the basic skills and gets you through your test. Now you can move on to high performance driving instruction. From my own experience after doing a course when I first bought my EVO VII, it was £350 per day for individual tuition. And then you have pro level instruction. Wendy was fortunate enough to get instruction from Tim Harvey at Cadwell through Formula Women in a Porsche GT3 Race car. Tim currently charges £1,000 per day if you provide your own car. Why should archery be any different from other sports? here we are talking about 'coaches' of driving with different levels of experience teaching different groups. Would you expect a potential BTCC competitor to go along to BSM for driving instruction? but on the other hand would you (normally) expect a 17yr old new to driving to go to Tim Harvey to teach him how to reverse park or learn the highway code?

| as a new comer to the sport i have fully expected to have to pay for coaching to progress without adopting too many bad habits (as opposed to friendly advice). not being made of pots of gold i would reason that some good time spent with a good coach every few weeks with lots of practice in between and the ability to ask some stupid questions over the email as ideal. as for rate...the going rate for music teachers (my only reference point) seems to be 20-30 and hour plus expenses. having said all of this i want to persue archery as a competitive sport to which ever level i am able to, a lot of people are more into the social and enjoyment of shooting aspects therefore finding out who is actually a good coach (in that aspect) rather than someone who has lots sensible advice on offer looks like a more challenging task edit. very good analagy watch man!

| 28p per mile? What car do you drive, a hummer? Yes I am prepared to pay for decent coaching and have done so. But most people are far happier to pay for a shiny new riser that will make **** all difference to their scores And of course you should be prepared to pay for travel expenses (even if the coach doesn't charge for the coaching itself) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| That's the standard GNAS rate. I think it is meant to cover running expenses in general, not just petrol. Edit - someone asked about going rates for coaching in other sports. Oxford sailing club coaches charge £25-£30 p/h; ice-skating something like a tenner for 15 minutes (!). Both these figures from my housemate, who is a qualified sailing instructor and is learning how to ice skate without falling over, I know not why.

| Casual User rate at work is 35.8p per mile up to 100 miles per day; 21.1p per mile plus £14.70 over 100 miles. Its meant to cover wear and tear as well as fuel plus business insurance cover. Maximum HMRC(Inland Revenue) approved rate is 40p per mile afaik. Could be liable for tax at 43p.
