Smile Coaching in your area

Hi,

I was wondering what the coaching system is like in your area/county/club? Is it well organised? Are there plenty of coaches available?

Please keep this factual and positive if possible as I do not want to give yet another forum for coach bashing

With regards to the Surrey coaching - I don't think it is particularly well organised. If I go onto the website and look for coaching there seems to be info for the coaches themselves, but none for actual archers. The link to archer-coaching.org leads you to a menu which leads back to the original site. A similar thing can be said for Gloucester AA, although that doesn't bother me as much as all the coaching I could need is at Cleve.

However, Hampshire is a pretty decent site, with a coach register, levels and contact details for all of them (and by the looks of it actually kept up to date with tournament info and suchlike).

Coaching's very good at county level in Yorkshire. We have a lot of people - notably Kath and Mick Fitzpatrick - who are willing to put in a huge amount of work and time. Similarly in Northern Counties - a lot of people willing to go the extra mile.

Things get patchier at club level though. There are lots of coaches around, but it seems most want to concentrate on their own shooting during the summer. My own club runs beginners courses throughout the summer, and we deal with dozens of people from all over Yorkshire and east Lancashire whose nearest club tells them that they can't get on a beginners course until autumn next year. I can appreciate that they want to do some shooting, since that's what motivates most of us to be in the sport, but it's a shame so many clubs can't find an extra few hours a week to run courses when people most want them.

Coaching in Lincolnshire has improved greatly over the last couple of years with the number of qualified coaches increasing hugely.
I think every club has at least a couple of coaches at some level or other, with some clubs like mine having more than our fair share (9 currently) so there is plenty of opportunity to find a coach to work with.
Formal coaching courses for archers and coach education has improved greatly though there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Now all we have to do is convince the archers that coaching is a good idea.
For many of the coaches, finding archers who actually want to be coached in a long term relationship can be a real problem.

I'm very optimistic for my county DCAS with have a new CCO who seems very keen, we also have a coaching group established and have had two meetings (unfortunately I haven't been able to attend either both times I have arranged coaching) but will do in the future. DCAS has a strong County based coaching for our Juniors squad, which meet once a month from October to start of April for a whole day, with at least 7 coaches in attendance. Plus other archers just their to help. I am hopeful the senior squad will start up again this winter.

At My club with have "ready tap" of Coaches all willing to help at a moments notice, we run two beginners course were we have at least 6 coaches to for 4 groups, and we have plenty of coaches available throughout the summer to help our improvers on a Wednesday, also we do work shops on string making, fletching and specific coaching for our junior club.

The club does spend a lot of time and money on these particular groups but we do to a certain extent let ourselves down on performance coaching in the club of established members, but change could be coming.

One the whole thing are looking better.
