Video is a great analysis tool... and will help the junior see what they're doing also. I wouldn't suggest going the physical punishment route as it may induce flinching and fear.

In my experience, the cause of throwing the bow to the side, particularly for novices, is to watch the arrow fly. Give them something else to focus on (e.g. "see if you can keep the sightring on the target until the arrow hits")

Hi speed video shows that the arrow is well clear of the bow before there is any movement of the bow arm, or draw hand(apart from fingers allowing the string to slide off).I think the apparent length of that delay is exaggerated by the speed of the cameras in use.
The bow moves towards the target and leaves the hand, to ge caught on the sling. The bow arm , moves forwards and left.
The bow moves because it is releasing its stored energy in the direction of the string travel, some into the arrow and some into movement of the bow itself. The bow arm moves forwards and left as it is controlled by back muscles which are acting from an area that is not in line with the arrow/bow.
The bow arm moves the wrong way(right for right handers) when
a) anticipation happens and the opposing muscles get use to stifle the natural reaction to having no weight to hold.
b) a collapse of the back muscles precedes the release and the bow pulls the archer's arms closer together, as if reversing the draw action.
c) the archer tries to watch the arrow fly and moves the bow to the right to past it more easily; often done before the string is released.
One way I use to spot some of what is going on, is to watch the draw elbow. It tends to move forwards just before release, when anticipation or collapse is present. It is often more noticeable than bow hand movement.

Ki Sik Lee reckons that this is a sign of good follow through and he generally knows what he's talking about.

Also, the amount of movement to the left seems to vary shot to shot. Does this mean something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my bow doesnt move to the right on release(lefty) it only goes forward.

and people rely too much from ki sik lee, he's been shooting permanently for years. it wouldn't matter if he dropped his bow arm everytime he shot, or shot with a dead loose, or tilted his head left or right. he shoots 1000's of arrows a week its built in form / style

Sorry - but I can't let this one go.

If that's what you think Mr. Lee is saying, then you've completely missed the point. You've entirely misinterpreted his philosophy (presumably by skim reading the book and thus not understanding the concept). I suggest you go back and read the book, and also perhaps peruse the FAQ on his website at KSL International Archery.

Just for clarity - KSL clearly states that the objective for the bowarm is to be as still as possible for as long as possible.

glad I got that off my chest.
