Well the line, "an old git" in your original post comes to mind. That does conjure up a very specific image!

.. meant in comparison to many of the guys on the line. For instance by the time one such at my club reaches my age he will have 30+ years under his belt, and I'm willing to bet that by then his muscular memory will be pretty much engrained - at said age I'm 3yrs in! And just in case anyone can't be ##### to look at the profile I'm 48

I'm a year ahead of you in both age and archery. I have no doubt that training helps, as it has with every other sport I have ever tried. It's taken a while and a LOT of arrows, but I now feel (this week anyway!) that I am shooting my 53# longbow with some relaxation and control rather than pulling hard and hoping for the best. Work that body!

As someone who is where you will be in 11 years time, no it is not too late. I started at the age of 45 but did not start taking it realy seriously until 4 years ago when I got early retirement. Since then I have reached MB and shot for Scotland (thanks to help from Simon and Lana Needham).
One thing I have found is how important being reasonably fit is. Reversals are good if you can not get out to shoot 3-5 times a week. It is about having the strength to maintain technique throughout a tournament. As well as building archery muscles I also do fitness training with emphasis on core strength which also helps significantly.
Age has its advantages. just think in 10 years time the 20 somethings will be coping with young families and spouses nagging about how much time they spend at the training field. Again I am lucky that I have access to a range 24/7 and all the time to use it.

I am 53 and like you have only been in the game for around 4.5 years. I have realised I need to be shooting a lot more and need to get myself fitter - both for archery and life in general. So I am looking at archery specific exercises for the shoulders and back and trying to work out how to do more shooting. I will improve my (embarrassing) scores this year and will get fitter. Driving a desk does not really help.
