Target PANIC

hi all

A couple of months ago I unwantedly developed target panic this became really annoying so i consulted AIUK. The majortiy of people who replyed suggested a clicker which made me introduce one into my shooting, this has worked wonders over the past month but recently target panic has returned causing me to release early and shoot through the clicker

Does anyone suggest any cures for this problem it would be greatly appreciated. oh and I shoot a recuve.

Adam

Legion - do a search for "panic" on the threads and you'll pick up on quite a few threads where this topic has been well covered. You are not alone!!

... and from someone who visited the target panic box on recurve many years ago, it can be overcome - dig in and good luck

Edit - you say you have read them. I'll go and crawl back under my Monday morning rock until I think of something useful to say

Yes, advice I've heard a lot in the last 35 years. Target panic? Use a clicker.

The clicker is a tool designed to give an accurate draw length. It works for some in masking the effects of target panic, but is essentially trying to cure the measles by treating the spots, not the disease.

You need a good coach, one who has dealt with the problem before. I had a spell about 3 years into being an archer, but with the help of a good coach, techniques such as blank baling etc, I learned to control it, and went on to shoot high scores.

Releasing before the clicker is a sign that you have replaced one unwanted habit with another one.
The way I would suggest, is to replace the latest bad habit with one that is sound. Learn this new habit well, so you can rely on it and know that it is correct. Don't try to shoot rounds or competitions while you are learning. Just set yourself the task and start at short range, increasing as you get better. If you half learn something, you will be back to where you started, eventually.
The new form must be so well established that it is "stronger " than the ones it replaces.
As a starting point, work at close range. Decide before you draw the string, that you will pull through the clicker and perhaps, not release until later,or just come down without a release. You may need several attempts before you succeed, but keep going till you can manage.Later you will find that you can draw without any worries that it might not work. Then shoot after the click. Increase the range and before you start serious shooting again, it would be worth working on alignment so you develop a better form than the one you are replacing.

From someone who suffered for many years, it may be easier said than done, but the relief felt when it starts to work, makes it worth a bit of a struggle.

Hi

As you have found out, all the clicker is doing in this situation is mask the issue.

Target panic is dificult to overcome, so you have to change the way that you practice rather than trying to fight it.

First off, start shooting blank boss about 15-20 yrds. Concentrate on good form. If you are not confident on proper technique, then get coaching and or read a good book. I personally like 'Total Archery' KSL International Archery

When you are happy that you can make a good strong shot, and are in control of the bow, rather than the other way arround, then have a second boss next to it with a 122 target on.

Switch between the blank boss and the target. Either 3 and 3 or 1 arrow per boss. Keep this up untill you are shooting the same shot on both bosses. There should be no panic, as they are the same ;-). Also there is very little expectation level with such a large face at a short range.

When you feel confident that you can execute a good shot @ 20yrs on 122 face, move the boss back a bit. only 2 - 5 yrs per time, and shoot a few doz at each one. The point is that you want to trick yourself that the distance is not changing, but you are still making good confident shots.

This will take a few weeks to get out to 80 - 100yrs, but when you do, you have the back up that it is just a bit further than it was when you were shooting well.

Hope this helps.
