I'm with rohenwto,
I use plasticine or better-still, play-doh - it's softer. I can see exactly how much clearance I have and the path of the vane. This also helps when setting a good nock position allowing for the spin of the arrow.

Good point about being less messy, though this method wouldn't show clearance issues with fletchings striking the riser. I'm afraid it is lippy on the vanes for me.
