Head movements

I have some 'problems' at the moment while shooting. It has been pointed out that when i release, my head moves as if looking for the arrow - this may be understandable if i had my eyes open when i release. I could have a nice draw up, anchor, then the hand part of the release would be good, but my head will sometimes 'jerk' to the left. Has anyone experienced this/Knows what causes it/knows if it is easily solvable.

Cheers

Chris

If you are right handed, then you could be 'peeking' to see where the arrow goes. It's quite common. Al Henderson has a good write up in 'Understanding Winning Archery'. He says 98% archery don't know why they do it and many don't believe they do.

The reason anyone peeks is because they put a higher priority on wanting to know where the arrow landed, or watching the arrow down range, rather than wanting the arrow in the gold.

The key thing he suggests is that you must concentrate your focus on gold - mentally burning a hole in the gold - and on your follow through.

Basically keep your concentration on the gold through the whole shot.

There may be another factor a play here as well, although you do need someone to watch you carefully. Last summer I began planting odd shots far to the right (left if you are right handed). I was spotted coming to anchor, then turning my head with my draw hand as I pulled through the clicker. After the loose, my head snapped back to follow the arrow - I never felt a thing, but it was obvious to a watcher. The problem was partly with my draw length/clicker setting, and a habit of ramming the platform tab hard against my jaw - as I pulled through my head moved with it. It is worth checking if this is happening.

LMP is correct, you must shut your mouth and keep your jaws locked together. If I forget my arrows end up high on the target.

I had a problem with my head in that I was tilting it forward so that I could get the string touching my lips. Ron my coach spotted it and in the weeks following I have focused on not doing it and keeping my head still, now I don't do it.

I've found chewing gum is bad for your anchor point . Subconcsious jaw movements.

I had a similar problem with tilting my head forward that was related settling down after a slightly high draw.
