Arrow speed

We had a chronograph at the club today. It was electronic and screwed on in place of the longrod. My Fatboys with 160 gn points went at 175fps with 43# on the fingers and an 18 strand Fastflight. Lighter ACE's were going at nearly 200 fps for other archers.I must try it with my Navigators and 16 strand string. Now we know the speed of the arrow what else do we get from this fact?

Well, if you use TAP or AA you can calculate sight marks without shooting other distances for one. Knowing the velocity helps when calculating things in these programs - flight distances, trajectory etc

As whisky said sights marks can be calculated from various ballistic programs, but for me the chrono is used not just once and shoved away with the knowledge of how fast your arrow speed is interesting as it may be, it can be used to check consistency of all your arrows, one may have slightly more pronounced drag angle on a fletching, the consistency and quality of your loose, how changes in style affect speeds can be determined and as you state changes in equipment, strings with less strands and of different materials, shorter center serving, tightness of nock fit, I share mine a "Chrony" with my air rifle club and just recently found the TS1 bowstring is out performed by BCY 8125 of similar spec.

Just out of interest, how much are we talking about to buy? Any thoughts on best models...and ones to avoid?

Added to this if you have two bow set ups (one as a spare) it can help you to set them up very similar especially limbs from the same manufacturer.

I also noticed that different stabilisers/ set ups also had an effect on the balistic arrow speed.

For reference I average 214fps with my bow (41lb on fingers ACE 520's 18 str ff).

The Radar chronograph the one that is bow-mounted is limited to arrow speed just out of the bow with the Chrony and if your confident enough you can shoot at longer ranges to check for energy retention, IE how much speed an X10 has lost at 30yd compared to an ACE.
