My 1st competition out of the club was last oct outdoors and i wasn`t nervous it all felt fine shot like a muppet because i was trying out new stabilisers and they weren`t fully balanced
the next comp i went to was my 1st indoor now this one was a little different
i was "unsettled" is the phrase i would use, we got there with very little time to spare setting up was a rush, + sprog had her foot in a caste, i was late starting sighters and i didn`t settle until half way throught the 3rd dozen.
Lesson learned i need to get there with plenty of time to set up and relax

Strange thing the mind.
I've never been nervous at a tournament, I wasn't nervous when I got married or when I took my driving test or when I made my best mans speech at my brothers wedding, I'm not even nervous at job interviews.
So why oh why am I shaking with nerves when I play darts for the pub team? I usually know most of the people there and I can hold my own with the best of them (within that particular small-time league) but when I'm on the oche my dart hand trembles and my stomache ties its self in knots.

No you're not a freak, you're a woman . I'd guess it's more to do with (and I'm generalising here!) men's tendency to think hierarchically?

The more comps I do, the less shakey I get (depending on who's there ) At my first one, I thought I was having a nervous breakdown.

Weirdly, I never get nervous field shooting.

I have only ever been nervous once...and that was when I went to Bedford for the FITA 18 before Christmas. I didn't feel nervous mentally, but my physical being was a wreck!! It was very odd

Anyway, I like to have my mp3 player on (taking out the earphone while shooting ) - the only thing I'll listen to is rave/trance music as it keeps the adrenalin running. I can look at competitions and see when I haven't had it!!

Every time I turn up at an indoor shoot I'm bloody terrified. No exceptions. The fear and loathing usually disappears along with the shakes around the third dozen.

Outdoors I'm usually a bit more relaxed - I think it's because indoors you're supposed to clean it, but no-one expects that outdoors?

My secret- keep busy.
If i have too much time to think i start thinking too much about how i shoot. Then when i get to the line the concious is working instead of the subconcious. I shot my best indoor score this year (portsmoth 587 instead of normal 575-580) whilst simultaneously running the SAA junior indoor champs. I was so busy organising I just went to the line and shot.
