I was shown how to assemble a bow, but the whole stabilisers, clickers, sights, I've learn't on my own (and with the help of books). The biggest problem is that when your starting out you try to correct too many things at once. I use video in my coaching because it is a great help, and a lot of body movement that you don't feel shows up beautifully, so you know whether you stab the shot, or clinch the bow during release. | I'm self taught too... and I found filming myself, taking pictures of myself, reading books, watching videos of top archers vital. James park's book might be a help to you good on this sort of thing. There was a point when I did get stuck and needed a bit of help (and probably to get much further I would really need a coach too) but you can get a lot further by doing these things than you can without doing them. Anything that makes you think about what you are doing can only be a good thing IMHO.

| I think that this is a good idea, but if you are new to the sport or intermediate I would suggest keeping the shots full length so that you can see how you shoot and general areas that can be worked on rather than getting too bogged down in micro technicalities of form. These shots will show if you stand up straight, drop your bow arm, forward release, if you are using your arms not the back muscles etc. The best way to do this is to set the video camera (front/side/behind the line) on a tripod as far out of vision as possible and then just shoot for 30-45 mins leaving it on when you collect(unless you are shooting 100yds) or get somebody else to switch it off this way you will forget about it and all will be revealed in its natural glory, it does use a lot of tape this method but you can always re use the tapes. |

| I have had a break of over 25 years from shooting. Went over to Perris and got kitted out (thanks guys!!!!) I didn't get the opportunity to visit my local (45 miles away) club for a little while so I started shooting at home. Luckily I can get 20 yds indoors. I used video to establish repetition. Not for close up shots of individual aspects but more of a full length shot to show draw length, posture, head position etc. Found it very useful to establish what I feel is a good base setting for me.

| I used dartfish, which was a cool novelty - filming yourself is fun, I have more videos for personal interest rather than specific purpose. Sometimes it's nice to pick out faults and see them for yourself. |

| It occurs to me that we've been here before, so these threads are prbably worth revisiting: Online Coaching Video Angles There are probably others, but you'll notice that I was involved in these, so I can remember them ![]()

| Thanks guys and girls. I'm filming tomorow so should be able to tell quickly if it will help me but your right a coach should look at the film as well. I was going to try comparisons with footage already online. The club instructors are not fully qualified but maybe can offer help to. I will try all angles I can get but only have the one camera also its outdoors so can't do any filming of how muscles are working till its a tad warmer outside. Will let you know how I get on, I'm sure I will have more questions to ask once I see the film. Lynn ![]() |

I'm sure that there'll be lots of volunteers to review the film from your shooting in warmer weather ![]()

| Normally I would have agreed with you linecutter, took camera today and no one would film for me. You see there was this cute little vixen of a borders bow competing for all the male attention and IT won. Will try again tomorow. Was shooting a consistant 5 spots out of 6 arrows, you would think that would get someones attention. May try a mini skirt and basque tomorow.![]() |
