The most recent attempt at this was the FX limb. Essentially done be reducing the thickness of the spacer along the limb. As you say result was limb stability issues and idea abandoned. Before my time Nishizawa produced limbs using the "ear type" method to get this let off effect, stiffening the limb tip by multilayer construction - am told it the limbs were too expensive for commercial viability.
